    Hi Nil,

I only learned about Telegram itself by seeing discussions about this gateway. I myself am more familiar with a program called GroupMe, which I only learned of because it was used by players in mmorpg games I used to play.

Maybe this is just the beginning.

It is a very nice app to use. The word about it just has to
get around some more. Stas' gate project has brought to the
fore some cool usefulness and purpose for using the app.

A few other echos have been added to the gate:

    DOOM
    DOORGAMES
    DOS
    ESSNASA
    FIDO_UTIL
    MOVIES
    TAGLINES
    TUXPOWER
    FUTURE4FIDO
    FIDO-REQ

NOTE to ALL: If anyone is interested in trying them out on
your smartphones, just contact either @aabolins or
@cepiersonjr, and we can add you.

I would think it's for mobility access. Fido on the move, you can keep up with some echoes while away from your computer.

I have the only 2 point system s I can find in the Google play store, and both have limitations, and little to no support.

This potentially could also give a way to introduce people to Fido who aren't familiar with it by using a chat app, which most people are familiar with, to access Fido echoes.

Not. This is rather another type of BBS. It is convenient that, on the one hand, the sysop shifts most of the work to third-party resources without spending his own (including taking care of the user's preferences). On the other hand, users get the opportunity to access such a BBS by mobile (wearable) devices, that they already have.
This kind of BBS successfully lowers the network entry threshold. Exactly enough so that a muddy wave of pioneers and older morons would not rush here.

I don't see much activity at all in the HotdogEd echo. I might try to add the RU one. I've emailed error logs to him. Once a year or so ago. At the time he replied he was too busy to work on my issue. Recently no answer at all.
I like the program because it allows multiple point connections. However it seems hard coded to not allow multi digit zones. When I try my node for FSXNet for example the handshake trust to connect with 1:4/100 instead of 21:4/100. It does the same with JustaXNet, which has a 3 digit zone.
Aftershock works with both, but only has one connection at a time, which would require me changing my settings manually for each Network connection.

Ideally, I would love to look at open source point or bbs software to modify for an Android to handle all of the connections, and have the features that aren't available to Android otherwise. But my coding skills aren't there.

The problem is that there is no one available to write this
thing you call "native modern and convenient Fido app".

Telegram seems to take care of providing a pretty good UI.

Stas' gate takes care of bridging the messages.

And, yes.. probably the primary idea is to make Fidonet

Just let me understand the whole Fido to Telegram recent trend
concept in general. Is it all about bringing in a mix a modern and

I would think it's for mobility access. Fido on the move, you can
keep up with some echoes while away from your computer.

It is exactly the native Fidonet app use case you are talking about.

I have the only 2 point system s I can find in the Google play store,
and both have limitations, and little to no support.

    HotdogEd http://hotdoged.propush.ru and AfterShock http://www.asvcorp.ru/aftershock/

While HotdogEd still has support and free for FTN transport and is paid for NNTP, the AfterShock project is paid only option and is not supported and is known to have bad behavior with message threads and stuff.

This potentially could also give a way to introduce people to Fido who aren't familiar with it by using a chat app, which most people are familiar with, to access Fido echoes.

Most software developers are bad at UI design, these are different roles and should be performed by a team. So far there is no good collaboration to establish some new fido app development in a modern fashion.

Another difference is that a typical app will talk back to a centralized backend server to sync up all subscriptions and it usually makes it possible to access your mail and groups from different devices including mobile, desktop and web. This kind of works for NNTP where all messages are stored on the server and a client can cache them for offline reading. Where the FTN approach is to download bundles for a particular FTN address, e.g. point address. Once you download incoming packets to your mobile phone, you will not be able to get them on the other device. I now people will create a few point addresses and setup some netmail forwarding/copying between them, but this solution is ugly.

The Problem with Facebook, and many other, if not all social media systems of the like comes down to their terms of service. They can control, and even claim ownership of anything on their platforms. And Facebook is also known for buying and either shutting down or coopting other services to make themselves stronger. Not something I think Fido wants or needs.

Most software developers are bad at UI design, these are
different roles and should be performed by a team. So far
there is no good collaboration to establish some new fido
app development in a modern fashion.

I cannot disagree with that. :) Engineers focused on
technicalities are rarely interested in aesthetics or
    ergonomics for the user.

One, Facebook isn't open source. 2 they get shitty with
their what's allowed and whats not. 3 do you really want
    Facebook involved in Fido?

The idea is to help people who stuck with the FB to allow
them read some fido echomail without leaving the platform
    of comfort.

I don't think you would find most smartphone users resisting
to add another app. Telegram is just one of those "other"
apps with fun times to be had for all. The messaging UI and
    operations are basically the same.

Bottom line, there is no open way to build such a thing to
integrate with FB Messenger. That's a good thing! ;)

In general I would agree. But that's why you have people such as ourselves who take these toys out and play hard with them.
Then we go back to the developer and say "This is good, but can you....." So they know what people would like to see.

That's the sign of a good coder. They listen to what the people using the program say, and make adjustments, as possible to meet what people would like.

True story. I worked for a large company that spent a couple of million dollars on a new modification for their program to help with logistics. I was invited to test. I broke their program in 10 seconds. The Project manager hated me.
    "Why would you do that?"
We were in a conference room next to the Customer Service Department and Shipping Department. I pointed at those areas and said "I know how these people think. It's something they would do."
The coders were across the table from me madly making notes for adjustments. The Project Manager kicked me out of testing.
The coders called me for the rest of my time at that company to have my input. I gave them real life results.

    Hi, August!

    13 сен 20 17:58, August Abolins -> Charles Pierson:

Look at the echomail stats table in the FidoGazette. If you
exclude the auto-posted echos, and the clearly pure sysop/bbs
talk echos, there are a handful of echos that could make good
    candidates for regular "users".

    - LIST of Telegram/Fidonet echos as of JANUARY 2021

This is just a little reminder about the Fidonet echos{*} that are available to be enjoyed using Telegram as of Dec 2020. Simply visit the links to get the full description of each echo and see the cool icon.

You might want to add a little info for moderators who might be interested in having their echoes on Telegram also.. who to talk to and how to contact them.

    Just a suggestion.. :)

    Hi Al,

That could be true. But I think the last hold-outs were the pull-outs and those would be the next best echos to add for the Telegram experience. Meanwhile, I have posted this in ECHO_ADS in the recent past. Maybe a reminder every month or so would work.

I really can't think of any other "official" fidonet echos that could work. Many of the others are pure programming or technical where copy-paste of source codes or tables would not work very well with the Telegram reader app.
