Hydro went off - again.

But this time there is no bad weather. There is actually a promise of up to 15cms of snow later on today. It's only -2C now. Tomorrow it is to be a high of +1C.

Hydro went out at 7am. It is now almost 10am. Would be nice to have some hot water. Cold coffee is getting old, fast. Power *is* present at my shop. I have to be there today anyway. On we go.

Hydro is the short-form we use to mean hyro electric power.
The main company that produces and oversees distribution is
called Hydro Canada. They are also involved in the various
nuclear powered facilities all over the country, but we still
refer to the lack of electric power as "no hydro".

I did indeed. But I didn't stick around very long. The
downtown was quite dead - only traffic zipping through. Nobody
was interested in shopping much today. So, I came home after
3 hours.

Turns out that the outtage was actually a planned outtage -
that I forgot about. They announced it 2 weeks ago. I can't
rememeber a piddly little detail like that after two weeks!

I remembered that detail just before I left the house. But
before I did that, I took the opportunity of the power outtage
and daylight to replace a thermostat-switch that wasn't
working. The whole house is equipped with the same model. So,
I swapped out a good one from a room I don't use, and always
kept handy when I could motivate myself to take off the broken
one.

This is what I was replacing:

The highest I could turn the broken one was to the 10 o-clock
position. I lived with that seized/broken one for 3 winters.
Not bad. Coldest it ever got was 11C in my main living area.

I still have same heating (base-boards) in the lower part of
the house. Those I could crank up higher on the coldest days
to compensate. The heat would flow upwards through the large
open stairwell.

My main living room (I've closed off most of the other rooms)
is now nearly at 17C from a previous low of 12C this morning.
Good enough. The hydro was off only 5.5 hours this morning.

It was owned by Louisville Gas and Electric Company (Kentucky).
There were 8 Turbines (Units) in the building.
It was the only Hydro Plant in the area, all of the other Generating Stations burnt Coal to run their Generators.

I was at work one day when a towboat locked through carrying a Hydro Unit
that was built in France that would be installed in Vanceburg, Kentucky.
It was a HUGE Unit, and that one unit probably would produce more electricty than the eight units in the nearby Hydro Plant could.

Just thought I'd jump in and make a comment.

My town has an old water "mill" that has been tried to be converted to a proper hydro-producing source. Not enough gov't/private monies could sustain the project. It was eventually scrapped. Sad, really. It could have been a tourist draw if branded well.

At one of Indiana's State Parks there is a Old Mill.
Visitors can purchase bags of ground up Corn (Meal) or Wheat (Flour), I can't recall which grain they grind up at that Park..

I'd think it would take a set of Gears to increase the Speed the Mill Wheel
rotates at to turn a Generator so it would create 50 (60) Cycle/Second
A.C. Voltage, as a Mill Wheel doesn't rotate very fast, maybe 3 full turns
per Minute I'd guess.

Yes, that was all factored in. But they gave up when they
calculated that the investment in the mods wouldn't pay back
within a year. Something like that needs to be extrapolated
to 5 or 10 years - especially if the majority of money is
gov't handouts for "tourism".

But.. at the same time, the building that housed the mill is
next to a larger building (was probably a storage facility)
that is now a set of apartments. Maybe the noise of a
generator would be an issue - but I don't remember that being
one of the concerns.

Yes it did! We watched at least one ship go through the locks. I would
have been there sometime between 1977-1980, I think. You might have been
one of the unfortunate souls who got their ears talked off by us. :)

It could charge a battery, which would then be used to provide current
into the grid. There are lots of applications where you use
self-generated electricity during peak times.

No, I had to keep my mind on driving straight up and down the Lockwall
because the Lockwall was narrow and there were Guard Rails on each side I
had to keep from hitting, and going in the Lock Chamber and landing on top
of a Barge OR if I went through the other Guard Rail I would fall 15 Feet
down on to Concrete. OUCH either way.

In the winter, after some Snow had been removed from the Lockwall, the next
day some of the wetness would freeze over and really make driving VERY INTERESTING after the Sun went down that evening.

If a Towboat called on the Radio, I would stop and pick up the handi-talkie
to answer them.

It sounds like Your group talked to the Lockman in the Upper Control building on the Lockwall on the South side of the Lock instead of on the North side where the Visitors area was at.

I say "Was At" because the older 600 Foot and 360 Foot Locks were eliminated and a second 1200 Foot Lock was built where those Locks were.
The Visitors area is now on the South (Kentucky) side of the installation, alongside that new 1200 Foot Lock.

I've been retired over twenty years and haven't got a phone call yet from
them asking me how to do something. GRIN

That is so true. But fidonet echoes are quite public too, even
to the casual non-BBS member. Early in the game, echomail was
restricted within the bbs community and often sysops would only
allow reading an echo if you were a registered user of their
BBS. But now, many BBS echo bases are fully viewable and
searchable via internet.

I would have preferred a non-google-scrapable fidonet. But the
cat is long out of the bag so to speak.
