I usually have plans for just about every bit of meat, again, thanks to
my up bringing. I did make the stock yesterday, both chicken and ham
for both soup (ham for lentil soup) and other uses. When I do a bit of
top of the stove dressing to go with chicken or cook kasha/rice to otherwise stretch out a meal, I'll generally grab a jar of stock
instead of just water for more flavor.

I don't have plans for all that I "save". But, I do try to keep a
tally in my head of the possibles stashed in the reefer. Still, every

I have plans, but they're always subject to change. Thought we were
going to do lentil soup initially with the ham bone, ended up doing pea soup. Then we realised there was more meat on the bone than we'd
thought, so ended up doing the lentil soup also. Did it yesterday, had
it for supper and put two boxes in the freezer, plus some in the
    fridge.

Space is tight enough in both the reefer and the freezer I have to take something out to make a dish so I'll have room to put something in. Bones
not destined for the soup/stock pot become doggie treats - and watch out
if you're wearing soft-soled slippers or bare/stocking feet.

once in a while I hold a "clean-out" session and get rid of the
science projects, especially those that have grown blue fur or ar otherwise unrecognisable

I try to keep track of that as I pull other things out of the fridge.

Oh, I do to. Sometimes it grates me when I pull out stuff destined for
the bin and set it on the stove and I get distracted before taking it to
the wheelie bin ... then come back to find that Dennis has put it all
back in the fridge. Not that he has a "system" and it's all easi to ge
at right up front. It just fries me a little.

Or I'll pull something out to toss and he'll say "I was saving that".
First I'll ask "What for?" Then I'll say "OK, use it up. But take it out
of doors before you open it. Don't be stinking up my kitchen."

Yesterday was my "end of year clearance". In the pockets on the door
I found a shrink-wrapped package of sausage. The sticker from the
    store
was faded - but I finally determined that it was Italian sausage from
last June. Since I knew I had not bought it I asked Dennis if he knew
anything about it. He said "Bought that by mistake. Thought it was
for breakfast." The dogs enjoyed the treat. Bv)=

Pups ended up with a treat!

It may have still been edible for humans - but I didn't want to take a
chance. And the mutts eat well. I call Jasper "super-mooch". If I'm at
my desk when I have my meal I'll put the plate/bowl on the floor when I'm finished and Jasper or Isobel will pre-wash it for me. Bv)= Unless it's General Tso's Chicken. Something in the sauce that neither of them like.

I don't do stuffing/dressing unless it's part of the "traditional"
meal or entree. More likely to make soup. And besides the home-done
stock or broth I've been adding miso paste for a nice flavour kick.

We like it as an easy side, don't do a lot of potatoes. Other
alternatives are couscous or kasha. Dad was a meat and potatoes for
supper man; most often the potatoes were mashed, sometimes with gravy, other times plain. He didn't really like rice but ate it the few times
Mom made chop suey, ate it more often when a Chinese restaurant opened
up in town (after I left). He and my mom did take out from there
    probably every other month.

I've got a rice cooker/steamer that gets a fair amount of use. Bv)=

I don't use my rice cooker as much as I did a few years ago. Sometimes I'll pull out the multi cooker pot instead, just depends on what else
I'm doing to go with the rice.

I already had the rice cooker, crock pots, pressure cooker, etc. when the "Instant Pot"/multicooker craze took off - so I bought one and used it a
few times before deciding that the things it was supposed to "replace' do
a better job at their intended purpose than the lowest common denominator Instant Pot. So, my sister-in-law took it off my hands.

Except when my brother is coming over. He's not done rice since he got
out of the Army. He says he was to close to everything rice when he
was in the Army in Vietnam.

I think my dad's dislike of it came from being in the Pacific theater
of WWII. At one point our son in law bought a Mitsubishi Eclipse; my
dad saw it and was not happy with D's choice. Yet he owned a series of Volkswagens.

Mitsubishi built the Zero - one of the best fighter plances of WWII. And
they make a decent car. VW didn't come to this country until well after the war. But the consortium which contributed to its founding included BMW - who built tanks for the Panzer Corps, Porsche who buily staff cars and trucks
for the Wermacht, as well as Heinkel and Messerschmight (and others).

Good thing he wasn'y coming for dinner last night. This was supper:

Title: Sauce for Fireside's General Tso
    Categories: Sauces, Oriental, Chilies
    Yield: 3 Ounce

    1 tb Hosin sauce
    1 tb Siracha sauce
    1 ts Soy sauce
    1/4 ts Chili garlic sauce
    1/8 ts Ginger paste
    1/8 ts Garlic paste

This is a sauce we made by experiment to spice up the
Riderwood's Fireside Restaurant's General Tso. It could
be used on other Chinese dishes as well.

It is sweet and hot spicy.

We've been working on clearing the older stuff out of the freezer (and
fridge freezer) for a while. Not bought a lot of meat in the past couple
of years--some, but not much. I went to put something in the freezer the
other day and was surprised at how empty some of the drawers are. It's a
nice feeling tho, and soon we'll be restocking meats in addition to the
meals I've been doing. The latter will be good when we start travelling
as we can pull into a place and have a hot supper without a lot of fuss.

Understandable. You didn't know all the little quirks like that before
    you started living together.

Old Scout camp skit--"greenhorn asks old timer if his bowl is clean, old
timer says it is "as clean as 3 Rivers can get it". Greenhorn figures
that is mighty clean, then old timer calls "cm'ere 3 Rivers".

    Haven't figured out what yet?

Got our first one, used it a fair amount, especially in the camper so we
got a second one. Found a half size one that resides in the camper. Just
have to remember to plan in site meals to use it; Steve tends to grill a
lot when we're not on the road. OTR meals tend to be fast, no fuss, easy
clean up since we're generally boondocking.

I miss having a dog or cat but know it is in the best interest of my
health that we don't. "Met" Rachel's dogs on our Christmas day video
chat, will do the in person meet up in a few months.
