• Green eggs, D'Bridge & JAM

From Aaron Grasswell@1:229/428 to All on Monday, March 22, 2021 14:53:00
    Hi Everyone,

Anyone have any experience setting up D'Bridge to work with JAM message areas? An extermal tosser?

I'm quickly running out of the 200 Hudson areas in RemoteAccess. :)

    Cheers
    Aaron/DW

    An extermal tosser?

You will need an external tosser which would then handle all of the tossing, scanning and Netmail operation; leaving the mailer to only handle Queue items. The internal mail processor becomes disabled.

The tosser of your choice must specifically support D'Bridge or "Arcmail" dynamic mode.

Do NOT place any outgoing Queue items from that tosser into the mailer's Queue directory. Create a new outbound directory just for that tosser.

Fastecho is broken, do not use it.

I'm aware of the hard-coded interzone SEEN-BY stripping and an issue with .PKT forwarding, is there something else that leads you to recommend that it not be used?

It is also abandonware no longer supported by its author. Any further problems discovered with it will likely never be fixed. I really slam it for the
Seen-by problem given the many inter-zone peers connecting here.

As Ib Joe suggests, Fmail is an excellent supported alternative.

This problem with FastEcho inspired me to add an option to mbfido to disable the inter-zone SEEN-BY stripping.

Yes, and HPT would probably work also.

D'Bridge still has it as an option, but in the next minor release there may
be a specific warning shown if it is enabled for an area.

I really don't see a logical need to have it anymore. INTL kludges were an option at one time as well. I removed that question from the setup-screen quite some time ago and permanently generate INTL as every system is 4D/5D addressing. I'm assuming in 1989 that 3D addressing was common.

As Ib Joe suggests, Fmail is an excellent supported alternative.

Yes, and HPT would probably work also.

Tossers that generate Dynamic/Frontdoor or Arcmail attachments should work.

Whenever I've looked at adding a new storage format to D'Bridge I'm presented with the following challenges:

    - Tossing and scanning and it must be spot-on perfect especially kludges.
    - Message creation and editing from the internal editor
    - Copying, forwarding, moving messages from the editor
    - Purging old messages either by quantity or date

Not impossible but does require a fair amount of programming and testing. Everything has to be perfect otherwise the Fidonet Police write me a fine.

I cannot use any libraries, units or API's, everything must be from scratch.

Nick might be in lock down and need a few things to do.. His daughter migh old enough to learn to code... what an excellent father/daughter thing to d

Wellllllllllll.......... Ward may concur that every time I'm flamed or taken to task over some silly text file called the "nodelist" or lack by some of invite-access to the secret society Z1C echo just reminds me its all fun.

Look at this MSGID/REPLY kludge nonsense - All just to thread messages and if you are missing those kludges in your software you're bad. And bad means impure. Impure means not compliant. Non-compliance is evil. Evil means you

At 10 years old I was into the Vic20... heavily. Until I got the Tandy 1000.

The Vic20 was my first computer, too. True story.. I won it in a Mother's Day essay contest back when I was 10 or 11 years old. It sat in my closet for months as at the time I had no interest in computers.

One rainy day I decided to break it out and mess around with it.. The rest is history..

Same here: first computer, a Vic20. Never had a floppy drive for it - typed in BASIC programs from magazines, such as BYTE, and occassionally tried to save to a tape drive - usually unsuccessfully. But it begat a couple of Apple IIs and a Timex Sinclair which eventually begat a PC-XT clone and well.. you know where that story goes.

Other people I knew at the time had the C64, or an Apple 2, or an Amiga... maybe a PC or Tandy. All of them thumbed their noses at the Vic20 as just
a toy but I was sooooo stubbornly loyal to it because it was just fun to make this thing do something with 3k of base memory and a tape drive. Countless hours spent.

When I found out that someone wrote a Doom port; THAT to me is a true loyal grand-master programmer who used that system to create a work of art.

Lots of Demoscene stuff was impressive too... using undocumented interrupts and elaborate calls to the graphics chip.

Too bad it rained that day, cost you a lot of money afterwards.
