A cold winter storm dropped both temperatures and fresh snow as it
rolled across the Southwestern United States on December 12-13.
Flagstaff, Arizona dropped from a relatively balmy high of 49˚F on
December 10 to a high of just 28˚F on December 13, with a low
temperature of 3˚F recorded on December 14. The town, which sits on the
edge of the Colorado Plateau in northern Arizona’s Coconino County,
reported up to seven inches of new snow by December 13. Nearby, but at
a higher elevation, the Arizona Snowbowl counted more than a foot of
the white stuff from the storm. Lower elevations across the region also
saw colder temperatures, but precipitation was in the form of rain.

On December 14, 2022, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer
(MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of
the Southwestern United States shivering under the chilly temperatures
with the higher elevations wore a blanket of white. The states visible
in this image, from northwest clockwise are Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New
    Mexico, Arizona, and California.
