Shown above is what I believe is the web of the spiny backed,
orb weaver spider. I noticed it beneath a white pine tree and used
my iPhone 7 to take this picture on the morning of August 22, 2022. The
overall web is over 12 inches (5 cm) across, and the outer diameter of
the tighter weave is about 8 inches (3 cm). This spider ranges far and
wide across the U.S. and tends to construct its web in shrubby
garden areas as well as the edge of woodland.
