    Hello Everybody,

The Swedish Prime Minister conceded defeat and has resigned.
And is being replaced by Sweden's version of Donald Trump.
The nationalists had the most votes, and deserved the win.

Call it what you like; it won't change the fact that my statement is
true. Nobody outside of that insignificant postage-stamp country knows
or cares anything about it. Especially regarding who the PM might be.

You have to be an influential world power of a country, like the USA,

    Hello Bj”rn,

And is being replaced by Sweden's version of Donald Trump.

LOL! As a US citizen you are excused for not understanding how a multi-party
    system works.

The US Constitution makes no mention of political parties.
And only mentions the word "citizen" once. In fact, the first
president of the United States was never nominated by any
party, nor was he ever elected. Which probably explains why
    he had no party affiliation.

The US also had one incumbent president who served a second
consecutive term without an election even being held.

But then, US politics has always been screwy ...

Yes, our hobby-nazis gained a few more percent than at the last election, but rest assured, with just 20% of the votes they will *not* be given any influence over the Swedish politics.

A bold, and brash, statement. But does it hold water?

We managed to keep them at bay for four years, when they had 17.5%.

And since then, those very same nationalists (Sweden Democrats)
have managed to win the most votes than any other party, forcing
the Prime Minister to resign, and are now in charge of forming
    a coalition government.

Finland barely managed to squeak by in the 2019 elections, holding
off their nationalists (True Finns) by a mere .2% - the final score
being 17.7 % for Social Democrats, and 17.5% for True Finns.

As learned from experience, allowing True Finns to take part in
the government did not work. So what do you think will happen next
    time around?

Spain's nationalist party (Vox) now holds a share of power, the
first time any far-right party has held power since the days of
Francisco Franco, winning over a third of the vote in February.
And Vox is a new party, having gotten its start in 2014.

France's far-right party, National Rally, led by Marine Le Pen,
did even better. Her party gained 81 seats in France's parliamentary
election, from its previous number of seats being 8. As a result,
President Emmanuel Macron's coalition no longer has a straight
majority it can count on to get anything done.

And with the leftist coalition led by hardliner Jean-Luc Melanchon,
whose party has 131 seats, Macron is a minority president now. With
about the same amount of influence as Vladimir Putin has in Ukraine.

Yes, the far-right is gaining power, and influence, in Europe.

It is proper in a halfway decent functioning political system that when one loses an election, on concedes defeat and as a result finishes the term and only handles current affairs before the newly to-be-formed government is ready.

In a democracy it is not common to reject the outcome of such an election and use every means, legal and illegal, including storming government buildings to hold on to power ... you know what and whom I'm talking about.

Her resignation effectively ends her term. The nationalist party,

In a democracy it is not common to reject the outcome of such an election and use every means, legal and illegal, including storming government buildings to hold on to power ... you know what and whom I'm talking about.

Yesterday, European Union lawmakers from 26 countries declared
that Hungary is no longer a democracy, calling it "a hybrid regime
of electoral autocracy" under the leadership of its nationalistic
    government.

I'll quote the parliamentarian Gwendoline Delbos-Cornfield,
who chaperoned the resolution through the assimbly -

"... for the first time, and EU institution is stating the sad
truth, that Hungary is no longer a democracy."

The resolution passed 433-to-123 with 28 abstentions.

Imagine that. 26 EU countries agreeing that Hungary (#27)
"... is no longer a full democracy but an `electoral autocracy.'"

Yes, the autocrat of Hungary accepted an invitation to give
a speech at CPAC earlier this year, and received a rousing ovation
from his American audience. If only he had a funny looking mustache,
he would have been mistaken for a certain corporal from Austria ...

    Hello Ward,

    [..]

We are talking here countries which have mostly always had a strong ruler without a mechanism for participation by the populace.

After WWII, the countries of Europe were decimated. Nobody had
anything, and it was a struggle just to survive. The USA helped
countries in the western part of Europe with its Marshall Plan,
and the USSR helped countries in the eastern part of Europe
    with its own version.

I do not believe any of the peoples in eastern Europe enjoyed
living under the thumb of Soviet misrule.

When that ruler goes away the people can not deal with it and a new ruler will raise its head.

Total nonsense. The Soviets were in full control of Poland when
revolution broke out. And do you know how it all got started? Not
by the death of the Soviet puppet ruling them, but by a musician
who put on a concert in a football stadium.

Chuck Mangione started to play "Children of Sanchez" and all hell
broke loose. He did not realize it at the time, but that song was
the theme song for Solidarity, led by Lech Walensa.

    The Polish leadership never recovered.

This exactly is the case in Hungary ...

The people of Hungary absolute adore their dear leader ...

as it is the case in Belarus,

Belarus is not a member of the EU.

Russia and most of the other countries participating in that conference now
    in the Middle East.

Russia is not a member of the EU.

26 of the 27 members of the EU voted that Hungary is not a democracy.
Of course, the 27th member (Hungary) claims to be a democracy.

That represents some 3 milliard people not enjoying the luxury and comfort of a participatory democracy, close to half the world population.

Winston Churchill once said "democracy is the least bad form
    of government." He was right.

If you don't understand the system, one shouldn't comment about it.

Magdalena Andersson quit. She is no longer prime minister, and
is at home baking cookies or whatever she likes to do as she no
    longer has any official duties.

Please read carefully what you wrote "...is now forming a coalition"

The nationalist party received the most votes, but not enough
to claim a straight majority. As a result, it is seeking an alliance
with other parties that would comprise a majority. That is how things
    work in multi-party systems.

there arde two things wrong with the claim ...

    Like what?

1/ they are trying to form a coaltion, it isn't there yet

It is a work in progress. Which is why I wrote "is now forming
a coaltion" rather than "has formed a coalition."

2/ Should the term indeed effectively have ended and the coalition noy yet in place, that would leave the country without government ...

The Boris Johnson episode in the UK was an exception to the rule.
After resigning as PM, he decided to hang on until his party came
up with somebody to replace him. Quite unusual, even for Brits.

But even if he had dropped dead rather than resigning, government
would have continued. Even without a prime minister. Such is the
    silliness of your claim.

so i don't think she is gone immediately as that would imply also all the ministers and their staff.

When JFK got his brains splashed in Dallas the government did not
come to an end. The only real difference being LBJ took over, with
the same people who served JFK so well. And then he went on to win
    election in a landslide ...

Yesterday, European Union lawmakers from 26 countries declared
that Hungary is no longer a democracy, calling it "a hybrid regime
of electoral autocracy" under the leadership of its nationalistic
    government.

Yes, it is called "Stating the obvious". Everybody knows this, it has been going on for years on end...

The people of Hungary love their leader. Won in a landslide. Four
times in a row. Free and fair elections, every time. If there could
be a president for life, he would be it.

Poland is heading in that direction as well ...

    Poland showed Hungary the way.

is at home baking cookies or whatever she likes to do as she no
    longer has any official duties.

When the Prime Minister resigns, the chairperson of the Riksdag asks the Prime Minister to stay and lead a caretaker government (which was until then the actual government) until the new government takes office.

If you care to send a letter to the current Swedish Prime Minister, it will (theoretically) land on the desk of Magdalena Andersson.

Formation of a government can take as long as needed. In certain cases even extreme long.

When in Belgium in December 2018 the Prime Minister offered his resignation, there were elections and it took exactly 592 days before a new coalition was ready ... that's the current world record. The runner up is also Belgium with 541 days some years before.

I understand as a presumably US Citizen you have very little affinity for government negotiations and the need for coalitions ... maybe you even don't know what a coalition is because you live in surroundings with just 2 overpowering parties so there is always one with a majority. Here there is never (anymore) a single party with all the cards ...

There are some countries where in such a case the government and a lot of essential servives close down, but if I dare to identify such a country I will be villified.

The good part of such a long transition period however is that no new silly expenditures could be approved and basically public debt went down because no new debt could be generated...

Ah yes, there is that problem of course, in a global network like this. Some people simply cannot accept that they do *not* live in the best country in the world without going hedge-hogging if someone even suggests anything like that.

So I agree, we must not speak out loudly what we think; freedom of speech is still not universally accepted. 8-)

But ... they are growing ... and soon they will be ... a *majority*.
And then ... the minority (everybody else) ... will have no choice ...
but to listen ... and do ... as they say!

Seriously Lee, rather than worrying about the Swedish hobby-nazis (we know how to handle them), methinks that you have bigger problems nearby. *Your* real fascists are now coming out of the closet, and are showing their proper, brown colour:
