From Dale Barnes@1:106/201 to all on Sunday, October 20, 2019 13:20:06
Since the old echomail archive site now down after a long run, is the data still available and is there any interest in keeping it going?

If so, let me know and I will attempt to bring it online (with the help of the previous owner if possible).

    Let me know.

    Thank you

    Dale

I can only repeat what I said a couple of month ago. I always had mixed feelings about Ozzmosis. One of the pros of Fidonet is thet it is NOT the InterNet. I want what I write in Fidonet to stay in Fidonet, not readable by anyone and indexable by Google and other search engines.

So please let it rest in peace.

    Cheers, Michiel

Although sometimes it was convenient to be able to use ozzmosis in the past, I agree with your statement!

    Bye, Wilfred.

Obviously this is impossible. I'm sorry to disappoint you. Took me less than a minute to find your message on the internets:

Not to worry. The search engines are not that thorough. You can't use
them to find any one specific message 100% of the time anyway.

But as far as displaying FTN messages on websites, that's pretty cool!

    Sychronet allows a webbased presentation.

    A few sample systems:

    http://freeway.vkradio.com/msgs/subs.ssjs?msg_grp=Fidonet http://bbs.tdod.org/msgs/subs.ssjs?msg_grp=Fidonet http://sectiononebbs.com/msgs/subs.ssjs?msg_grp=Fidonet http://sestar.synchro.net/msgs/subs.ssjs?msg_grp=Fidonet

I see this as progress and a great way to provide a glimpse of Fidonet to
    the masses.

Although sometimes it was convenient to be able to use ozzmosis in
the past, I agree with your statement!

All of the webbased presentations, including ozzmosis, lack one key
element: Search. Without it, a bit more manual labour is required to step through the messages to find anything. The convenience was limited.

Maybe Sychronet's web login account provides a S)earch, but someone
    running the server can elaborate.

I agree. Web based access to a BBS is *not* the same as internet
    usenet.

Ozzmosis did not have a search. Other web based sites do. I often use
Doc's Place (bbs.fisosysop.org) to check on messages. It has a search function. One can search based on (partial) from/to/subject/ or body, including combinations of those fields. OTOH, the message base does not
go back anywhere as far as ozzmosis did. A quick test tells me that he
has about three years of this echo.

Of course, I believe that you have to be a member of his BBS to use that
    search method.

If you log into any Wildcat BBS running the latest version you will get a better layout and search functions, more user friendly interface.

My system is fairly new so not much history but there are others that are.

Try https://tfb-bbs.org to see, if you don't want to create an account you can log in with visitor and password guest.

This place shows some recent posts in select echos (FTSC_PUBLIC, HAM,
WIN95, LINUX, and a few others) ..but many have stopped archiving many
    years prior:

    http://www.fidonet.itu.se/echomail/

Useful for browsing for a few messages from the past. But the coverage is inconsistent. Many other echos are listed but inaccessible.

    No Search feature. :(

The following link is a nice summary of FirstMessage Dated and LastMessage Dated per echo to save wasting time with hit-n-miss clicks:

    http://www.fidonet.itu.se/echomail/cmd/info

Nevertheless, it's an interesting "way back machine" + "some recent posts" effort by: Michael Cronsten, Fidonet: 2:205/412

The display is sparse, but makes efficient use of screen space, no fancy
html filler for beauty, and a small font.
