Wow ... Tina Turner is a node in Fidonet??
Why was there no REPLY Kludge?
Also I did not get the original mail that you replied to.

If you spell Eichhörnchen like Eichhoernchen then you get away with ASCII for German.
If the software supports UTF-8 and you can read/write Russian, Hebrew, Arab or Chinese then it can be fun indeed.

    Hey Richard!

Tina Turner is a node in Fidonet??

Not that I am aware of but I posted it to her anyhow given the subject.

Why was there no REPLY Kludge?

    It wasn't a reply.

If you spell Eichhörnchen like Eichhoernchen then you get away
    with ASCII for German.

But then how would I spell Björn? I suppose I could spell it Bjørn instead but then Björn might go off the rails and nobody wants that ... do they?

    If the software supports UTF-8

Yes it does. As in the post "simply the best" it wrote German, Russian, Greek,
Swedish and English. Unfortunetly the Swedish was all ascii but I have been know to post Swedish with utf8 characters in the past without any complaints. Mind you I believe it was you that had issues with one of my Swedish proverbs in the LINUX echo not too long ago.

and you can read/write Russian, Hebrew, Arab or Chinese

They are all possible except with Chinese I'd have to move to a GUI app instead
of the console. However since this is the FTSC_PUBLIC forum I believe that Hebrew, Arab and Chinese are not supported, along with almost every other language on the planet. Also I threw Greek in the post which is also not supported by the FTSC so I suppose you caught me red handed breaking with 'standards'. Oh well.

    Hallo Sean!

Isn't this the reason FIDOTEST exists?

Maybe but I needed to see it posted on a certain web site to see if they can count utf8 characters correctly.

For the record they can't but they can display them. Also I couldn't find FIDOTEST there but I can find FTSC_PUBLIC.

I understand why you're looking at the message from the Web-based side of things though.

I'd offer you to use my BBS for FIDOTEST but it won't work for what you're attempting.

    Hallo Sean!

If it's the website I'm thinking of it hasn't been maintained in
    a long time

It's in Russia. I'd have to have a better look around to see if it has been maintained but it did post "simply the best" which I can confirm was created recently. I'd rather not advertize for them but will post the url(s) if pressed to. There are two posts there that tell the tale that the site cannot count utf8 characters properly. I made sure with my posts that this would be obvious if true.

I'd offer you to use my BBS for FIDOTEST

Maybe for future tests. I am confident we could design a test for whatever either of us could come up with that requires testing. Also I prefer terminal apps over web based ones. "simply the best" was created by a terminal based app and will demonstrate proper word wrapping on a BBS that can count characters properly. Can yours? ;-)

Because she provided the subject which is accurate and deserves honouring.

    If the software supports UTF-8
    Yes it does.
    Yours ... many others not.

Too true but someone has to blaze the trail and demonstrate the one and true way as opposed to the total failure of the current strategy as expressed in fts-5003.001.

The issue is that I do not speak/read Swedish.

In the case of the msg/reply (I don't recall which) in question it didn't/doesn't matter. However your comment at the time on the questionable translation by 'trans' generated some interesting exploration. Thank you for that.
