• SQUISH ... who can submit the proposal?

From Ozz Nixon@1:275/362 to All on Sunday, February 17, 2019 20:43:49
Can anyone who has the message base well documented, submit the missing proposal (or empty one)?

And would it make sense, for me to submit JAM also?

So it is atleast somewhere in the FTSC docs ;-)

    O.

it was discussed some time back (maybe 10-15 years?) but decided against since they are not FTN related... they are specific to message storage which can be done in any format and is not required for FTN participation...

FOSSIL isn't required for FTN participation either, yet it's an FSC document. <shrug>

it was at one time because that was the only way to have the software be able to run on multiple platforms with widely differing serial port methodologies...

there was also a video fossil (aka VFOSSIL) used due to differing video methodologies... MSG is also documented and not required...

i actually liked the idea of having the message base formats and detailed information on how they worked in the library but... that discussion was back when odin, colin or scott were the chair... i'm fairly sure it was before scott... i don't have a problem adding them to the /reference/ library... it is

For archival purposes, I don't see a problem with it. The "prior art" seems to condone the practice (for FSCs anyway).

Great... I know it has been a work in progress for the past 2 years, thus, I spoke up. I have my JAMAPI coded, now I am working on my Squish implementation.

Also have my Hudson, Goldbase, Renegade, PCBoard implementations finished. Looking at Squish and Adept to wrap up this month... and then stress test FMTP which each format. HMB and GB have obvious limitations, JAM is much like PCBoard (since PCB is older), and I know Squish is limited to 9 deep on the reply chain.

You should not bother with Adept - it has been abandoned more than 10 years.

More importantly 2/3 differing distributions have vanished.
    It was only for OS/2.

Orion is still around and is open source.

But to untangle the mess that is Adept/Orion, you'd have to have a lot of time and a deep knowledge of all things OS/2. Gatekeeper, Adept/Orion's message tosser, is an unmitigated mess.

I have a large -ish file are just for Adept but I have now lost the sources for both Adept
version as issued by the two programming teams.

I did hatch both out many years ago as as I did I must have deleted my internal copies of
this 'assuming' they were in the bbs file bases.
However some thing went wrong some where down the line and they totally vanished.

If you actually have them I would appreciate a copy of both or a link of where to get them
    from.

My Adept file area is :

    applewoodbbs.linkpc.net/files/local/adept

    with the index at :

    http://applewood.linkpc.net/files/local/adept/index.html

and they can be obtained via anonymous ftp then cd local/adept

Forgot to add I have somewhere an updated? version of gatekeeper that I had changed and
    used when I ran Adept.

With the demise - OK IBM discontinuing OS/2 and refusing to make the source available to
the community I switched to Linux.

The progress of OS/2 since then from both sides of the pond has not changed other than
changes to drivers and most of that was via the OS/2 community so I refused to remotely
consider paying silly money for a subscription for the so-called newer versions.

I and a few others offered to IBM to extract the Windows code base from Warp 4.52 and
update it for modern CPUs including 32 and 64 bit operations but they ignored us.

My attitude after such response was to migrate away from it - pity it was a good system but
just has not kept up with newer technology so my decision to more away has proven valid.

Luckily my mainframe on a stick work does NOT require the use of OS/2 and Linux works well
as does a Windows platform when pushed.

Have you tried ArcaOS? There's a huge library of ported software available now

via ANPM. Heck, I even have git running under ArcaOS.

I and a few others offered to IBM to extract the Windows code base
from Warp 4.52 and update it for modern CPUs including 32 and 64 bit operations but they ignored us.

They can't do it. Microsoft co-owns the copyright on all of the kernel code and that's why it's not been open sourced. I have friends who work at the Austin, TX IBM campus who did a lot of work on OS/2 -- I even personally witnessed a version of Warp 4.52 that could run 32-bit Windows executables natively in one of their labs -- who told me that's pretty much the reason OS/2

died: Microsoft. It's still being used by a good portion of business because of its stability.

My attitude after such response was to migrate away from it - pity it
was a good system but just has not kept up with newer technology so my decision to more away has proven valid.

I don't mind. I mean, this is for a hobby and I'm not complaining. ArcaOS is still picky with hardware, just like the original OS/2 is, and I'd never recommend it for anything other than a BBS for my personal usage. I have Windows 10 64-bit set up for my amateur radio use though I am considering virtualizing that install and setting back up Slackware on that computer. It'd

    be a shame not to.

Luckily my mainframe on a stick work does NOT require the use of OS/2
and Linux works well as does a Windows platform when pushed.

I know someone who has a working HP mini-computer running HP UX in his basement. This thing has a console on a cart with a huge cable connecting it to the mini. He has it up just for fun. I told him he should offer shell accounts on it. :D

    Later,
    Sean

P.S. I think we should take this to netmail as we've long jumped the thread...
