    I think I posted before about this, at least in the D'Bridge echo,
    that there is a Sourceforge project porting the NTVDM subsystem of
    32-bit Windows, over to 64-bit. The NTVDM system is the DOS-emulator
    portion of Windows.

    This means that 16-bit MS-DOS programs can now run on 64-bit Windows.

    I have this installed on my 64-bit Windows 7 laptop for testing and
    was able to install and run D'Bridge, Renegade and Searchlight. Batch
    files and the like seem okay. The real test for me here will be the
    dialup modem, FOSSIL and Door games; and a Windows-based Telnet
    server that passes the network socket and handle to the NET2BBS
    program which is what my BBS starts-up from.

    Anyone else try this out yet?

    That sounds amazing. A lot of 64-bit OS owners could benefit if it
    could truly run 16-bit programs; for us SysOps to run 16-bit
    utilities/doors. I see great hope for the future of BBSing.

    I hope this project can prove to be more than a novelty. Can retro
    programs (especially 16-bit MS-DOS applications) endure long-term
    interest on modern computers?

    Same file, that's just source code. So we're back to working out how to compile it. If it was a Linux project, dead simple, I do that all the time, but not on Windows.

    Ahh.. but that's not the same experience. vDOS is nagware and requires registration to run uninterrupted by a pop-up every 3 hours.

    However, vDOS sounds like a fine solution for the serious-minded that absolutely rely on the resurrection of a few special DOS program from the past, and get on with things with their modern Win10/64 pcs.

    Some POS (Point of Sale) and database applications come to mind!

    There is a grwoing segment of people who have relied on specific DOS apps with their Win7/32 pcs for years and now need be able to use them on
    Win10/64 pcs.

    But is the future for fidonet-things dire without this capability?

    It would seem to me that the more real/critical matter would be the "Year 2038" problem. Does this problem go away on 64bit systems that run old
    DOS or Win/32-bit programs?

    I loved the fonts in vDos, but could not get it to work with archivers in MultiMail. I loved running MM in a 25x80 font smoothed full screen window in vDos, but couldn't create a reply packet. DOSBOX worked out of the "box",
    but the fonts needed a little tweaking.


    ... Have you ever seen anything like this place?
