I am curious if anyone has a favorite flavor of linux to recommend to a beginner? I have used linux previously and can follow good directions.

There's many alternatives. I like Linux Mint with the Cinnamon desktop, which seems suitable for a relative newcomer too.

In that situation I usually recommend to look around what people you know and would ask in case of any questions are using (and go for that as a first try).

I'll second that. I helped my wife install Linux Mint on an Lenovo ThinkCentre that I picked up on Woot!

She installed it and uses it with ease. And she's not a computer person.

Unfortunately, CP/M doesn't have nearly the software, no hard drive support, no multi-tasking (but you might be able to move to MP/M) and I believe it limited to 64K. Note this is all based on my RC2014 which I had lots of fun putting together.
