[2] In these days of people looking for lower prices of books, and ebooks, HOW does

Actually, in the RPG world (as in actual tabletop RPG games) there has been a tendency
for increasing quality at the expense of quantity and price for quite a while.

I have noticed many RPG manuals come with thicker paper, better inking, more illustrations... you name it. Many of these manuals don't feel like field manuals
(like early D&D books) but rather stuff made to be read at home. IN fact I tipically
keep the manuals at home and take cheap photocopies to the table. This behavious is
    encouraged by the publishers.

You can see a similar effect in boardgames. Gamers prefer a game to have big plastic
detailed figurines rather than cardboard tokens even if that means they pay premium
    for it.

What I mean is that there is a niche for hobbyists who are willing to spend loads of
money without a need for it.

Since "JD" doesn't seem to want to answer, perhaps you can help clear
    this up for me...

Please explain how offering a "premium" version of a product (in this
case a book) is "exploiting" anyone, or is "immoral". Please.

As a follow on - is it also "immoral" to offer things like a First Class

considered as exploiting the poor saps sitting in Economy?

How about eating at an upscale restaurant, when I could stay alive by
simply eating a can of dog food. Am I exploiting the common folk by
spending 10 times what I might have otherwise?

Serious questions here. Please help me understand. Thanks.

    Hello John!

    $250 is just blatant robbery.

I'm sure the Limited Editions are very nicely built.

    Obama's book:

    A Promised Land | Hardcover
    Barack Obama
    Pblisher: Crown
Biography & Autobiography / Presidents & Heads of State / Political Science / American Government - Executive Branch / History / United States - 21st Century
    Published Nov 17, 2020
    $45.00 US / $55.00 CA list price

..seemed like an impressive volume in terms of material
quality. Someone remarked "it was designed to last".

Even this one seemed quite impressive at the price:

    Telephone Tales | Hardcover
Gianni Rodari | Valerio Vidali | Antony Shugaar
Enchanted Lion Books | Enchanted Lion Books
Juvenile Fiction / Humorous Stories / Imagination & Play / Short Stories
    Ages 8-12
    Published Sep 18, 2020
    $27.95 US / $41.95 CA list price

"Every night, at nine o'clock, wherever he is, Mr. Bianchi, an
accountant who often has to travel for work, calls his daughter
and tells her a bedtime story. But since it's still the 20th
century world of pay phones, each story has to be told in the
time that a single coin will buy.

"Reminiscent of Scheherazade and One Thousand and One Nights,
Gianni Rodari's Telephone Tales is composed of many stories--in
fact, seventy short stories, with one for each phone call. Each
story is set in a different place and a different time, with
unconventional characters and a wonderful mix of reality and
fantasy. One night, it's a carousel so beloved by children that
an old man finally sneaks on to understand why, and as he sails
above the world, he does. Or, it's a land filled with butter
men, roads paved with chocolate, or a young shrimp who has the
courage to do things in a different way from what he's supposed
    to do.

It's an entertaining piece of construction in addition to the
    stories within.

the expense of quantity and price for quite a while.

And where is that so-called quality being produced? China?

I just checked a random premium book from Nosolorol from my shelf. A Spanish company
is listed as the printer and the inner credits identify the book as printed in Spain.

Boardgames are massively produced in China, though, with some exceptions. I keep
thinking of buying this horse-themed board game (Winners Circle) but the only edition
worth it is Korean and costs more than a kidney transplant - including the price of
having the mafia kidnap a kid and extract his kidney for you.

Actually, in the RPG world (as in actual tabletop RPG
games) there has been a tendency for increasing quality at
the expense of quantity and price for quite a while.

And where is that so-called quality being produced? China?

I'm repeatedly disappointed that many books have "printed/ bound/manufactured" in China markers.

China is simply more competitive. Some years back I published a coffee table style book, a Regimental History, with lots of photos and diagrams so it made sense to have it all done nicely in colour.

I costed it out to print locally and in China. there was no comparison. The China cost included all those "extra" features such as chicken embossing, satin book marker, fancy end-sheets etc. It was also hand-stiched not machine. Cost price was half the price of the local cost but for five times the number... that is local price was R120000 for 1000 copies. China cost was R60000 for 5000 copies. That's shipping to SA included.
I flew to Shanghai to to the QA checks which were perfect and still made a huge profit
This is why I say charging that amount for the "premium edition" is ridiculous. Make a profit, sure, but don't blatantly rip people off.

R60000 = approx $3K? For 5000 copies that's pretty good. A local author, the subject of "The Last Guide" , had the hardcover version of his book printed in China for $3/copy, DELIVERED. And he retailed his book at $35 a piece. So, there is plenty of room for profit, and consequently plenty of room to be less greedy. ;)

Serious questions here. Please help me understand. Thanks.

Lol, it is not me who thinks billing premium for non-essential
services just because some morons will pay it is exploitative. I
am afraid I haev no satisfactory answer myself.

Okay, I get that. It's funny though, how those that do think that way
have suddenly gone quiet. It appears they can't explain it either.

Perhaps they realize now how dumb it makes them sound. <SHRUG>

Nosolorol's catalog is mostly RPG manuals. They have some fiction and some gamebooks,
but it is an RPG company at heart. They have a number of comic-based RPGs too.

The reason for wanting the Korean edition is that it is better built. The horse figurines are more solid and the board more sturdy. The current Spanish edition retails at deluxe prices but you'd think you are gonna break the horses when grabbing
them. As you know, I like it the other way around - I want to be grabbed by a horse
with force just bellow my breaking point :-)
