    A lot of films and stories like that throw in a mix a things that are technically imminent (ST's "communicator" - hand-held and badge variety - seemed like the precurser to portable phones) and things that are simply impossible (the "beam me up Scotty" machine). So.. it would be a false to assume that everything would come to pass given enough time.
