I recently acquired a set of the volumes of "The History of Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" for someone.

I really like the formality of the language as exampled in the Acknowledgements and Preface. Particularly, "not my intention to detain the reader by expatiating on the variety, or importance of the subject.." and the acknowledgement given to the copy-editor with "whose inimitable accuracy almost assumes the character of Genius".
