• Retaking The Worth of Immortality

From Richard Falken@1:135/115 to All on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 09:36:03
    Hello,

I was thinking of retaking The Worth of Immortality for many reasons. The
first one is that it looks like my life has stabilized enough to start
    writing again :-)

I was however considering if a change in the business model would be worth
it. I don't think selling individual literary pieces works anymore, literary magazines are a dead end because editors only publish their friends' work,
and micro-crowdfunding sounds suspiciously like charity to me.

I have a friend doing videogame streaming who I was considering to sponsor
in order to get my work promoted, but first I have to figure out how to properly monetize it :-) If you are interested, he is kannabinya at
twitch.tv. He has a very nice videogame special on Sunday 17:00 Michigan
time. I suspect there is a bit of demographical overlap between the audience
of fantasy games and readers of Fantasy.

    Any thoughts you'd share?

    That's good news!

I was however considering if a change in the business model would be
    worth
it. I don't think selling individual literary pieces works anymore, Interestingly, there have been a number of extremely successful guys who've self published on Amazon in recent years. Partially print, partially Kindle but the biggie has been audible.

    literary
magazines are a dead end because editors only publish their
    friends' work,
I used to create a PDF only magazine some years ago. I was actually thinking that a sci-fi/fantasy mag might actually be very cool. it's a serious amount of work of course.

I don't think PDF magazines are as popular as other electronic formats these days. A lot of people complains about the limitations of PDF.

Maybe it is just a small minority of complainers though.

If you decide to carry on with the idea just send me a heads up. I have a ton of material ready to ship which I am not shipping because there are no magazines fitting it :-)

Well, you've seen what I can do with ePub.. so that might be a good option.

Maybe it is just a small minority of complainers though.

No, I sortof agree with that. luckily, my software I prepare once then generate all the different formats.

    I will let you know.

On a semi related note, I was considering offering to convert the Fido newsletter to epub.. I'm hesitant to even offer though because the "puritans" tend to scoff and mutter at anything that's new.

I found that an nntp subscription using my iPod was a good
solution to read the mag after pulling in the issue/pages from
    a dedicated echo.

I don't see an ePub edition improving any convenience. Infact,
it would require an additional transfer to an eReader. I'd
rather read the mag direct, or online via html.

However.. if the mag would be processed through Stas'
@Fido2telegam system, that would be very convenient and provide
a bit more outreach to smartphone/tablet users.

Well, if you can do it in an automated way and place it in some website with a nice RSS feed, it sounds fine to me :-)

That's not gonna work for iOS smartphone/tablet users. ;) And rss app sounds cool.

    You got it. Screw WWW.

Look, I spent weeks porting wdfs-fuse to OpenBSD and I am kind of tired of doing http work :-P

Same thing when I was trying to fix a bug in Polipo, an http proxy. THe http specs are very energy draining. Being exposed to them sucks your live dry as if it was a vampire of emotions.
