    I am sure not many people knows what a Fourier Transform does, but those who do know it is quite handy for creating filters for electronic equipment.

    I agree 100%
    There are plenty of examples where we solve daily problems with maths that we aren't even always aware of.
    More importantly though is the underlying principle. That is that Maths, language and music are all exactly the same in that they are systems of manipulation of symbols as placeholders for values. Learning how to solve quadratic equations (an example I frequently see used as something "useless" except at school) is not only valuable for its own sake, but more importantly, trains your brain to manipulate symbols which boosts your ability to use language with more precision and clarity.
    The good old "story sums" are practical lessons in how to break down day to day problems into logical steps and solve the various parts.

    I was a bit suprised by the "no practical use" statement by the
    publisher myself. But maybe the editor mis-interpreted
    something about the book's approach to writing as a skill.
