Well, I have a plan with Xfinity that if the cable modem gets zapped, they'll replace it for free.

It's a challenge if you live on one coast, and the customer service
line is on the other.
A few years ago I was having problems connections and Comcast sent out a
repairman with 36 hours one, arriving on a Sunday. He checked everything, JM>pronounced the modem dead, replaced it with the router and back in business. JM>No charge.
I have the PC hardwired but everything else runs off the router.
