I was watching a show the other day that was from the 1950's. The postman
(or possibly, a parcel delivery man) put the package in a mailbox (at the street) and then blew a whistle to indicate that the mail had been dropped
off.

Does anyone remember a time when delivery people, on foot, would blow a
whistle after leaving the mail?

Not I.
I do remember home delivery of dairy products, when I was a kid in the
early to mid-50s. I seem to vaguely recall his motorized delivery truck
having jingling bells. I know the ice cream guy who cruised the neighbourhood in
the afternoon having music play

I do remember home delivery of dairy products, when I was a kid in the early to mid-50s. I seem to vaguely recall his motorized delivery truck having jingling bells. I know the ice cream guy who cruised the neighbourhood

One of my aunts still lived in an area that still had milk delivery in the 1970's. I remember the metal box that sat outside their door. I assume it
was insulated but don't remember. They lived in Michigan. I was never up early enough to find out if the truck had bells or not.

The ice cream trucks that still come through my area still play music. :)

I caught the tail end of dairy delivery in the early 70s. (I was born in
1965)

A few years ago working traffic control at a football game a funny thing happened.
It was early in the season and a warm day.
A ice cream truck announced its arrival with the music playing and all.
This woman was talking to another when her little girl came up wanting
her to buy her an ice cream. The mother said "Honey, don't interrupt while
I'm talking" and continued the conversation.
Once the truck was gone she turned to her daughter, who was still saying excitedly, "Mommy! Mommy" and asked sweetly "what do you want honey?" with
the little girl disappointed saying "nothing" and walking away.
I got a laugh of the way that was handled. No arguing, no giving in,
etc. It was if she didn't know what the kid wanted.
