they likely were when they were installed... it is possible that the roads have

I wound up where I wanted to be. :)

The places I lived in Colorado Springs, CO are gone.
The two places in the little town of Trinidad, CO are still there.

    I couldn't remember the landladies name. :)
I imagine I would get a well than warm welcome as a stranger wanting to
come in and look around someone's house. :)

Some states one can drive for miles without any signs at all and go far
afield then have to find some connecting road or back track.

That can waste a lot of time... and/or lead to some interesting explorations.... <G>

The only time I had a unmarked detour was due to an accident and that was understandable. And I saw a lot more of TN than I planning on. :)

That's why I patronize AAA.... Generally I can get a stack of maps
before I leave on a trip, from broad coverage to city maps

The atlas had insets for big cities which was useful.
In addition when I connected to the net using the free wifi of a
particular FF place, Apple maps would show not only where I was, but how to get
    to
    where I wanted to be.
A day or so out I would check the net "for things to do in" whatever
town I was closing in on. It also gave directions on how to get to that place.
I would map out my journey a couple of days ahead that way.
Plus I had a half sheet of paper with notes reading "Rt X to Rt Y" which
I could glance at when needed. (Have a stack of those).
Lots of places I would check Apple Maps for more detailed information.

I guess I'd noticed that.... but then I tend to use the interstates more than
    you

Interstates are fine if one is in a hurry, which I wasn't.
On interstates its the same exits, the same FF places, etc. One has no
idea where they are. And if there is some attraction one wants to see its miles away (as a rule), whereas on the old road it just off to the side.
And everyone isn't a speed demon on the older roads.
One sees more of the country, large and small towns, its a slower drive.
I am far more comfortable driving 50 mph than 70 or more.
Plus, if you miss your turn you can just make a U turn or some business
to go back rather than drive 20 miles to the next exit.

One place I stopped sold real paper maps and paid for one only to
find where I was going (a few miles away) had them for free. :(

That was a bummer... Another good reason to have gotten them beforehand
    at AAA.

Since I don't own a car I didn't want to join just for some maps. :)
I was a member one time and was planning a cross country trip moving back
to CO from WV and wanted the scenic route via GA, etc.
The woman at AAA said "but the interstate is much faster" I told her I
was in no hurry, I wanted to see things. It took a while for her to
    comprehend I didn't want interstates.
Of course she had to plot everything out rather than draw a straight
    line. :)

You are certainly getting around... :)

All (mostly/generally) true.... :) I'll take interstates when they
actually are the most direct way to get where I need to go, and
especially when it will be a fairly straight shot to a major place, like
on this last trip that started with a trip to the Montreal Airport... I
used the back roads all through the US up to the bridge to cross over
into Canada, and then headed for the 401 that went directly to the
airport... I'd stayed in NYS longer than my original routing,
particularly to avoid a LOT of construction on the interstate on the
section between the bridge I was supposed to have taken and the one I
    did take....

One place I stopped sold real paper maps and paid for one only to

I've generally had better luck with the trip counselors I get.... I just
tell them up front what sort of roads I prefer... and often I've had
ones that totally agree with me.... :) And besides, the interstate
isn't necessarily all that much faster, and sometimes takes one further
out of the way so even though one is going faster, one doesn't get there
    any sooner.... :)

this one was cut off right there... this seems to be a common occurance with your posts... i've not said anything until now... i have my suspicions as to where the problem is but i won't voice them here right now... i don't know what
to suggest other than writing more and thusly shorter paragraphs... i can't tell if it is a line/paragraph length problem on the BBS you are uploading to or what...

to try to explain that: today's systems use one long line per paragraph instead
of numerous lines of specific lengths like we used to do in days past... if lines are longer than the buffers allocated to them, they get truncated and the
additional characters are lost... we mainly saw this when quoting but in some cases, it happens on import...

it is a bug or design flaw in the software accepting the postings... they should be checking the length of the input data against the size of the buffer and processing in chunks until all the data is handled... for some reason, they're filling the buffer and then stuffing it into another shorter buffer without length checks and so the tail ends of some of your paragraphs are being
    cut off...

if you reread your messages on the system you are uploading them to, you should
see the problem and be able to report it to your operator so they can report it
to the software maintainer... if you are using news to read and write your messages, you may want to download your messages from the server again so you can see them and not your local copy if there is one...

Generally that ends up being the case when I've decided to take a toll
road, such as the NYS Thruway.... Long stretches, I like to have some be
back roads and some the expressways.... although, in some cases, like
going into the North Country (upper NYS), I more and more avoid the
expressways more often than not.... :) My bottom line is avoiding
    hassles wherever possible... ;)

I had no time limits (after the first few stops) for the most part.
I usually started looking for a place for the night around 3 knowing
I would have a better chance of finding something.
I used the booking.com app on the phone sometimes (when I could get
a free wifi signal) for upcoming big towns and check room rates,
location, etc. I found I could book a room in less than 30 minutes
before a planned check in. Smaller places I just took th

    (the first place you saw...?)

I preferred staying at small "mom and pop" places. They were always
good, "homey" and they need the business that big chains take away.

True.... I tend to just stay with friends and family of some sort, and
plan the trips accordingly.... only occasionally have I stayed in some
    sort of hotel/motel....

isn't necessarily all that much faster, and sometimes takes one further
out of the way so even though one is going faster, one doesn't get there
    any sooner.... :)
I remember a couple of times I'd missed a turn and driving around aimlessly and thinking "I don't know where I am going but I'm making
    good time." :)

At least you are still enjoying yourself... that's the important
    thing... ;)

I would love to do this again someday, seeing places I missed.
Start planning your route now....? <G>

There is so much of this country to see!

That there is.... I doubt I'll ever see all that I'd like to see... but
I've seen quite a bit over the years, as it is.... :)

this one was cut off right there... this seems to be a common
occurance with your posts... i've not said anything until now... i have
my suspicions as to where the problem is but i won't voice them here
right now... i don't know what to suggest other than writing more and thusly shorter paragraphs... i can't tell if it is a line/paragraph
length problem on the BBS you are uploading to or what...

Interestingly, I don't recall having him having had this issue
previously... only in this set of travelogue posts.... Maybe he usually
does write shorter paragraphs.... or something recently changed
    somewhere....

Be good to have, if nothing else, a backup.

i started to ask you how close you were going to be so maybe we could meet...

From Ed's it was a straight shot across KY though Frankfort.
I waved in all directions as I passed. :)

unfortunately i was dealing with an extremely rough patch of life at that

    I know how that goes.

    Joe,

Why can't they be more centered???

What's more important is "Why don't potholes put your shock absorbers
    BACX into alignment??".

There will be a considerable delay in repairing the potholes around
the area. We regret to inform you that the pothole repair truck fell
    into a pothole!! :P

So much for "your tax dollars at work"??
