I set my system to only do it during "inactive hours" between 2am and
8am. That way, when I'm on the BBS, or on ham radio nets, it won't pull
    that crap.

I only have mine on when I'm using it.
If I plan on being gone longer than an hour I shut it down, other than
the modem. If less than that I leave it alone or maybe put it to sleep.
Of course running a board you have to have it on 24/7.
We had a small local board years ago that was up between certain times of
the day. Of course that was during the days of dial up.
The reason I leave the modem on is that thing takes several minutes to
fully function from when its turned on till its ready. This is the only modem I've had that cycles through a bunch of things before it starts working.
Its provided by Comcast, has a ro

    Joe,

Well, I don't have a regular landline, but have MagicJack with voice
mail. The BBS is telnet/web only.

Probably from the time Daddy went to work, until he came home. <G>

I got a link the other day from a former Sysop of the audio of a modem connecting to a dial-up BBS. The caption said "Kids complain about
having to wait to connect to Netflix. They had no clue on what we had to
deal with, in calling a BBS".

Apparently there were some issues with that update

I got another mini-update the other day (the ones that take only a few minutes and run in the background).
Don't know if its just me but things seem to move slowly after these
    updates.
Got a notice yesterday on the laptop about the major update and doing
that now and after 30+ minutes only 5% is downloaded.

... a friend of mine had a similar experience... finally she was able to get
    things to work again

I've given a heads up to others who haven't gotten the update yet.

    Joe,

... a friend of mine had a similar experience... finally she was able to g JM>things to work again

I bought a Lenovo laptop with Windows 10 64-bit (the BBS computer, and
what was my late Mom's computer, have Windows 10 32-bit), but while it
sees the wireless mouse, it doesn't respond to it...preferring the thumb
touch pad instead. At least it recognized the external keyboard. If I
could get that wireless mouse working, I'd be happy. I bought it,
because when I tried to put Windows 10 on a laptop that originally had
Windows Vista Basic on it, then was upgraded to Windows 7, it crashed.

I've given a heads up to others who haven't gotten the update yet.

Due to glitches at times, I just do mail runs once a day.

The poor computer is still trying to process the update, no doubt....

I don't have a Windows computer, so I don't have to worry about those
constant updates.... Richard does have a couple of Windows machines,
but, as he usually has them off unless he's actually using them, the
updates seem not to find him until some of the early bugs have already
    been worked out of them...

    I'm the same way.
Unless I'm going to be not using it for less than an hour, it stays on.
If more than an hour then its turned off and everything shut down (monitor, router, etc). I only have the printer turned on when I'm using it.
I know people who leave this stuff on 24/7/365. Unless one is running a business, a board, or something that's a waste of electricity and resources.

Exactly... to say nothing of leaving one vulnerable... Richard used to
turn off his computer at work when he left for the night... As I recall,
the company IT weren't all that happy with him, but he felt it better
    and safer... :)

Being on levelized billing for the electricity helps. :)

Instead of taking a much needed and wanted vacation, I may buy a
generator instead for the house. Yet, the price quoted is ONLY for the generator, and NOT for the installation.
