What Is HD Voice?

I use a Blackberry Q10 circa 2013 and have been noticing that some calls are tagged "HD" on the display. They sound way better than non-HD calls.

How HD Voice Improves Sound Quality

HD Voice also enhances sound quality by increasing the sampling rate (the process of converting a smooth analog signal into a digital signal). Traditional telephony samples audio at 8,000 times per second. HD Voice samples at 16,000 per second. How to Take Advantage of HD Voice Technology
