Would it be a good idea (or even required?) to remove any references to that in localdefs.mk ?

An improvement, perhaps, but still... my thinking is that somebody who doesn't (already) know they can't create /sbbs without being root isn't
going to know how to do the "run as root" that you added. They don't
know *how* to run that command as root.

Would it be better to first instruct them to "su" to root, or to preface
the commands with "sudo"? The example prompts ('$') might need to be
changed to '#' also...? Just my (unrequested) input. ;-)

You're making assumptions that the sbbs account that was setup (as you say in the wiki article, let's assume), then they may not have given the user sudo permissions, so are you going to mention then also? Then...if they didn't know how to run something as root, how would they have created the account in the first place?

Then again, I think someone setting up a bulletin board for the first time is likely to pick the OS they know. I don't most people who have only ever used Windows are going to say, "Ah, Synchronet, I think I'll put that on an OS I know nothing about".

Well, there maybe one or two I could name, but in general, I think you have to assume people know what they're doing.

No argument with any of that... I think on many n00b-friendly distros nowadays, you can make a user account with a GUI applet that only
requires your own password to authenticate, so perhaps they made the
'sbbs' user that way. I know, that's another assumption. It's nearly impossible to cover all possible scenarios for this, without a
    ridiculously long instruction document.

    Howdy,

Wiki edit of http://wiki.synchro.net/install:nix by digital man:
[Notes] Add links to pre-built macOS binaries, update links from ftp to http, etc.

Does the work for Mac arm mean, that support for 64 bit arm is in the pipeline as well?

I'd love to move my sync to a Pi running 64bit OS, but as of a month or so ago, it still didnt compile. (Spider Monkey and libffi if I recall where the issues.)

It is. I'm typing this message on a macOS SBBS build. :-)

I think it depends on *which* 64-bit OS you're using.

Which one is known to compile sync? My Pi's are running rocky but then I run Sync in a container, so I can base it on many other distros.

I think it's Raspberry Pi OS. I haven't myself played with a 64-bit OS on an rPi yet, but I think that's what Deuce us is running on his rPi4 that's part of our CI/build farm.
