n00b questions: What is the purpose of the Synchronet Data echo, and how does one use it?

It's for sharing data among networked BBSes, specifically for: user avatars, bbs list entries, smm profiles, Minesweeper scores, etc. If you're not running Synchronet, you likely have no use for it.

n00b questions: What is the purpose of the Synchronet Data echo, and how does one use it?

It is an echo for Synchronet (and other software, like doors) to use to transfer data between Dovenet systems. It is not really meant to be human-readable.

How long do messages in this area need to be retained for?

I think the only program that re-reads the message base is Synchronet Minesweeper, so the messages need to be retained as long as you want to track high-scores in that game. If you don't care about high scores in that game, then it doesn't really matter.
