• IP filtering rules

From Rixter@1:103/705 to all on Wednesday, January 01, 2025 09:35:07
I am working on my robot.txt file and also was reading the wiki on ip filtering. I prefer silent filtering and I was wondering what the /24 or /30 means at the end of the filter rule if you want to block a 'range' of ip numbers. I am coming at this from an older dial up mentality so most of this is new to me. I was hit with googlebot indexing 'everything' on my BBS yesterday, literally downloading 2000 files for a long period before I realized what was happening. It just made it run a little slower but I logged in at lunch and noticed in the statistics that a 10 gigabytes of files had been transferred. That is normally a month's worth on here. LOL. I have since blocked the 4 addresses that seemed to be staying logged in as 'guest' I have also made it impossible for 'guest's to download anything. Then googlebot started indexing the fidonet messages and other message boards. So started researching and blocking anything showing as 'googlebot' in the name resolutions. What do the /24 or /30 suffixes do? I hope everything is starting off the New Year great! Thank you,
    Rixter
