• Download via web ?

From Amessyroom@1:103/705 to all on Sunday, January 05, 2025 12:47:58
Seems there may have been a feature to download via ftp or http link in the past; and it was removed ? based on what I read on the wiki.

If this is true, can someone share the history/reason this was disabled ?

Have noticed C-net and Mystic bbses providing web links (temporary) for larger files. Wondering if there is a way to do this with synchronet.

I see the default menu shows the following
    [X] XMODEM-Original [1] XMODEM-1K/CRC
    [Y] YMODEM [G] YMODEM-G
    [Z] ZMODEM [L] Local Copy

Protocol, Batch, Quit, or [Next]: L

[û] Hang up after transfer? [Yes] No

Can you cite what wiki page you're referring to? I don't know of anything like that being removed.

Downloading files via FTP and HTTP are integral features of Synchronet. Sending a link to someone via the terminal server could be done (wasn't done before that I recall), but FTP URLs aren't really all that useful these days since you can't use them in modern web browsers and an HTTP URL would depend on *how* you're sharing your files via the web: ecWeb or webfileindex.

Have noticed C-net and Mystic bbses providing web links (temporary) for larger files. Wondering if there is a way to do this with synchronet.

    [Y] YMODEM [G] YMODEM-G
    [Z] ZMODEM [L] Local Copy

A temporary link isn't necessary since Synchronet provides permanent links, e.g. https://vert.synchro.net/Synchronet/sbbs320b.zip

There's also the option to email files to users: https://wiki.synchro.net/module:emailfiles

Can you cite what wiki page you're referring to? I don't know of anything like that being removed.

I got confused with FTP and HTTP in what I was reading on wiki.

    https://wiki.synchro.net/history:newfilebase?s%5B%5D=transfer
    Look under FTP

    Downloading
    files
    via
    FTP
    and
    HTTP
    are
    integral
    features
    of
    Synchronet.

Sending a link to someone via the terminal server could be done (wasn't done before that I recall), but FTP URLs aren't really all that useful these days since you can't use them in modern web browsers and an HTTP URL would depend on *how* you're sharing your files via the web: ecWeb or webfileindex.

So as stated, FTP isn't as useful since it isn't built into browsers ; and may require another client and/or complications due to unique network configurations.

Is there a way to share a web URL when someone downloads, vs using a protocol? To facilitate a web download for large files?

I'm using webv4, I've not heard of webfileindex. So I guess I probably, do have web URLs for my files; but didn't know if there was a way to turn on that feature for downloads from the terminal server, or if it might be considered a feature to add.

    Thanks.

That is referring to an HTML index file that the FTP server used to be able to dynamically generate and send to web browsers, back when they supported the FTP protocol. That feature was removed since web browsers stopped rendering HTML files sent via FTP quite long time ago now.

Is there a way to share a web URL when someone downloads, vs using a protocol? To facilitate a web download for large files?

Yeah, I'm working on a way to make that easy for sysops.

I'm using webv4, I've not heard of webfileindex. So I guess I probably, do have web URLs for my files; but didn't know if there was a way to turn on that feature for downloads from the terminal server, or if it might be considered a feature to add.

Yeah, it's a pretty simple addition to just display a URL. The user will have to copy/paste from the terminal into a browser (unless their terminal has support for clicking on URLs).

Technically, the webfileindex isn't needed for sending files via HTTP/HTTPS either, just the Enabling of "Filebase support" in SCFG->Servers->Web Server. The webfileindex is just a(nother) way to display indexes (directories) of files to users with file descriptions and such. It's enabled by default in new installs of v3.20:

    É[þ][?]ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ»
    º Web Server Filebase Support º ÌÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ͹
    º ³Enabled Yes º
    º ³Index Script webfileindex.ssjs º
    º ³VPath Prefix /files/ º
    º ³VPath for VHosts N/A º ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍͼ

This is separate from the ecWebv4 method of sending files via http/https.

Maybe something, deuce can add to syncterm :-) Open with default browser ?
LOL (like Deuce doesn't have enough to do with syncterm).

If you upgrade to the latest development code (v3.20c) and create the file text/menu/download.msg with content similar to the following:
    FTP: ftp://@INETADDR@/@FILE_FTP_PATH@
    Web: http://@INETADDR@/@FILE_WEB_PATH@

That should do what you want.

you can WRITE your own script for doing this.

In the past i had a batch download script that would take all the files the user wanted, archive it and put it up on the web under a temp filename.

I'm not seeing the option, my default protocol of zmodem is being used when i try and download anything.

If I goto default protocol to change this is what i see.

    [X] XMODEM-Original [1] XMODEM-1K/CRC
    [Y] YMODEM [G] YMODEM-G
    [Z] ZMODEM [L] Local Copy
    [E] E-mail Attachment

Hmmm. Let me test classic shell using mine; so maybe the new menu isn't picked up.
