When I set up FSX I imported message areas, however the approach I took for Fido was to simply let the areas be created as messages came in.
This ensured that I only had active message areas. The downside is
that I had to spend a small amount of time editing them after they were created to add a useful description (instead of the echo tag). Small price to pay for a cleaner setup.

That is a good approach, I have done the same thing myself.
