    register on the BBS :))

Yes, sir. Many have forgotten that FIDOnet is also USENET. You can use both USENET and FIDONET in your email client at the same time.

hmmm sure... nowadays I just use thunderbird as mail client - and dont' use it

much, only when I'm using my desktop at home.. so I didn't even try to config usenet on it - if it works... don't even remember if it does :)

anyway, so long I don't use usenet.. I loved that... like.. 20 years ago.... then it became a desert... and I quit.

but maybe I could take a look at config for fidonet, sure.

All mail programs, including those for smartphones, have the function of connecting newsgroups. You just need to know the server address, port, username

Pretty darn cool. Man, outlook expres. That sure brings back memories. I do remember connecting to usenet with it and browsing through alt.computers and stuff. I never knew you could also to this with a bbs. maybe its time to fire up that old XP laptop I still have lying around and send you some outlook love

Sir, you don't have to have an old computer to access newsgroups. This is a corporate standard. Usenet works in all modern gadgets.

ok, time for an insanely dumb question:

Do newsgroups still exist ? Last time I went they were filled with mostly bin files for apps and movies. But do people still use them for discussions ? (and how does it differ from the messeages here on a BBS).

I'm kinda new at the whole retro thing (Now there is a nice quote) but i'm very

interested in finding out just how it works.

Yes, newsgroups (Usenet and other nets) still exist and some of them are fed through FidoNet and other Fido-based networks. You can also pull them from some external sources, such as newshosting.com and giganews.com but "buyer beware". Most of Usenet is junk, spam, and a waste of time. Even the trusty rec and comp headings are trash.

Some still chat in them, maybe some have decent conversations, but from what I've seen most of it is pretty gross.

But even a heated discussion has more value than plain old automated spam.

Flame posts would be much better than the stuff I saw. If you're into incredibly racist, homophobic stuff, then you might like it. Personally, I'm not, and it kind of made me want to vomit so I'm not going back, but hey free speech and all.

I call it "curating the library of our mind" where we take responsibility for the content we consume. Carefully curating on what you spend your time an attention is key. Choosing not to read homophobic and racists posts on newsgroups, or getting riled up by hate speech and chronic complaining on Social Media is a healthy move.

I don't feel disgusted by such stuff, but why pay to get those stuff when you can find them on forums and imageboards? Seems like a waste. I'm sure there must be something newsgroups offer other than slurs and spam.

I absolutely agree with this, don't put yourself in a position to get aggravated or upset if it's in your power to choose. I always opt for the stress-free/least stressful option if one is present.

I think it's somewhere in "the art of war" where it says: Those who you let to govern your emotions shall rule you forever. Making somebody aggravated or afraid are powerful emotions to get their attention. A lot of the social media algorithms are geared towards this. Boosting content that gets people upset is the way to get them watching your content (and your adds).

This leads to a society where our views are distorted by our perception of reality that is governed by content creators who bait on fear and anger to get clicks. Our view of and response to the covid pandemic was influenced by this. This leads us to a sort of societal mass-histeria where our response is not in proportion with the actual facts.

mostly bin files for apps and movies. But do people still use them for discussions ? (and how does it differ from the messeages here on a BBS).

Some resources which may be useful to you:

First is a report of the newsgroups with the greatest numbers of posts,
which may help you find newsgroups with activity on them:

    https://github.com/tgeek77/UsenetReport

Second is a subreddit dedicated to Classic Usenet, but has a lot of users who would like to see more activity on modern Usenet:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/ClassicUsenet/

Third, while you can of course find a BBS which carries newsgroups, you can get

a traditional and free account with which you can use a classic newsreader of your choice (Thunderbird works):

    https://www.orwellfoundation.com/

The short of it is, there is some legitimate activity on the text-only newsgroups but you may have to look a bit to find something of interest. There

are also complete lunatics who, for reasons known only to them, still use Usenet to spew their insanity and/or hate.
