• wttr.in reports in TQW_BOT

    What's up, good people?

    I just auto-posted a few wttr.in reports into TQW_BOT.

The last couple of days I've been toying with a new script to capture output from the awesome wttr.in service, and display it in an BBS friendly ANSI format.

I may make it a nightly thing if that's OK. I just picked a different few cities around the world. If you'd like to have a city added to the mix, let me know.

If nightly posts are too annoying, let me know and maybe I'll set it up to be a

    weekly thing instead.

Ooh this is good, I like it.

Ah, good, thanks. Hopefully it looks OK for most people. I did get feedback from one other individual in another message net saying that the ANSI codes didn't come over properly. Right on! I love to see them in full colour, but some people like to use news readers that don't show the ANSI colours etc, but I think as long as the subject of the message has the standard "[ANSI]" prefix, I don't see it as a problem.

Right on! I love to see them in full colour,

Not a problem, they'll remain in full colo(u)r on this net :)

but some people like to use
news readers that don't show the ANSI colours etc, but I think as long as the subject of the message has the standard "[ANSI]" prefix, I don't see it as a problem.

I had the same thoughts, and I do follow that ANSI tag convention, but it was still addressed anyway. Oh well, it was nice to at least confirm the plain-text

versions post and look OK as well, so I was glad to make the change on that other net.

On a slightly related note, one thing I might change in both the ANSI and non-ANSI posts is simplifying the wind direction arrows, because I noticed on some others' BBSes, the triangle pointer arrows sometimes get interpretted as nonprintable control characters (like the right triangle arrow [ascii 16] becomes a DLE), and it messes up the rest of the message from those characters to the end. So for that reason the next wave that goes out will have the arrows

replaced with ^ for north, > for east, < for west, and v for south, and we'll see if it looks better in those readers.

This is a pretty old post that I'm replying to, but why not make the wttr.in lookup as a door "game"? That's how I have it set up on my BBS. That way the user can check whatever location they want with the weather right then.

Actually over on my main BBS you can do just that. If you run syncterm you can see it in full sixel mode too =)

    That's actually what's making those posts. :)

Some months back I put a script together to curl the output from wttr.in to a local file, downgrade the colors from 256 to 16 (if needed for the terminal), translate most of the UTF8 characters to close matching CP437 characters, and display the results to the user. When a user logged in runs it, they can enter the desired location or just use their IP address.

I also made it so it can be run without a user logged in, that way I can run it

for a bunch of different locations and merge the outputs into a nice report to post around the nets. That's what you're seeing in TQW_BOT (as well as in other

    weather-related echoes).

It's part of a larger 'weather center' mod that I've been tooling around with on my BBS. It mainly gets and displays forecast data for US cities from weather.gov and for international cities from openweathermap.org. Getting info from wttr.in is just another option I threw in there.

If I can figure out how to download radar map images from these sources, it might be cool to convert them on the fly to sixel and display them in SyncTERM... :)
