Right, the answers are below, so DO NOT SCROLL ANY FURTHER IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE THEM. NYT Connections today (game #514) - the answers (Image credit: New York Times)

The answers to today's Connections, game #514, are YELLOW: DVR BUTTONS PAUSE, PLAY, RECORD, STOP GREEN: GROUNDBREAKING DIFFERENT, NEW, NOVEL, ORIGINAL
BLUE: COMMUNICATE THROUGH WRITING CORRESPOND, MESSAGE, TEXT, WRITE PURPLE: THINGS WITH FEET BIPED, FURNITURE, POEM, YARDSTICK My rating: Moderate My score: Perfect

I lost my Connections streak yesterday, so it was good to get back on track today. I was helped by a couple of pretty simple ones for yellow and green. The first of those was DVR BUTTONS, though it could easily have been buttons on a VCR or DVD or stereo or whatever. The second was GROUNDBREAKING, with answers of DIFFERENT, NEW, NOVEL and ORIGINAL. I nearly got tripped up by the final two, with POEM looking like it could potentially match with MESSAGE and TEXT, but putting those two with CORRESPOND and WRITE to form COMMUNICATE THROUGH WRITING made more sense, so I had no need to solve purple today.

How did you do today? Send me an email and let me know. Yesterday's NYT Connections answers (Tuesday, 5 November, game #513) YELLOW: THINGS THAT ARE FUZZY CATERPILLAR, FLEECE, PEACH, PIPE CLEANER GREEN: THINGS WITH SHELLS
CLAM, EGG, NUT, TURTLE BLUE: FIGURES IN SHREK DONKEY, DRAGON, OGRE, PRINCESS PURPLE: MAGIC ___ CARPET, KINGDOM, MARKER, MUSHROOM What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green
is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final one, as
you'll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It's a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there
are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

It's playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

Connections today (game #521) - hint #2 - group answers

What are the answers for today's NYT Connections groups? YELLOW: THINGS THAT ARE YELLOW GREEN: BUILDING ADD-ONS BLUE: CONCERNS FOR A DENTIST PURPLE: WORDS THAT SEEM LONGER WRITTEN THAN SPOKEN

Right, the answers are below, so DO NOT SCROLL ANY FURTHER IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE THEM. NYT Connections today (game #521) - the answers (Image credit: New York Times)

The answers to today's Connections, game #521, are YELLOW: THINGS THAT ARE YELLOW CANARY, LEMON, MINION, MUSTARD GREEN: BUILDING ADD-ONS ADDITION,
ANNEX, EXTENSION, WING BLUE: CONCERNS FOR A DENTIST CALCULUS, CAVITY, PLAQUE, TARTAR PURPLE: WORDS THAT SEEM LONGER WRITTEN THAN SPOKEN COLONEL, PHARAOH, WEDNESDAY, WORCESTERSHIRE My rating: Moderate My score: Perfect

Well done if you solved today's purple group through anything other than
luck, because it's a bit of an odd one. I definitely needed some good fortune with it, because the connection WORDS THAT SEEM LONGER WRITTEN THAN SPOKEN is really quite an odd one. For a start, isn't some of this dependent on understanding how language works? Sure, if you didn't know that PHARAOH had a silent second A, you might think it was pronounced PHAR-A-OH. But that's also true of KNOW (K-NO) or TRUE (T-RUE). It's just English! I'm not sure that PHARAOH actually seems longer written than spoken at all. You could maybe put WORCESTERSHIRE in that bracket, but only if you've never been to the UK. It all just seems a bit arbitrary.

The way I stumbled upon it was related, admittedly. I instead focused on missing syllables, although I guessed more with hope than expectation, and by that stage in the game had very little idea what else it could be. I wasn't helped by my other problem group, blue, including a word I'd never heard used in the context of CONCERNS FOR A DENTIST, namely CALCULUS. Apparently that's another term for TARTAR, so I don't see why both words are in there. All in all, a little unsatisfying.

I seem to be making quite the habit of guessing groups with one connection in mind, only to get it right even though the answers were all linked by something different. I had two of those today: purple and blue, although in both cases I was halfway there.

Taking purple first, I put PYRAMID, LADDER and CHAIN together as things that humans might form into. I tried MUDDLE along with them don't judge me, it
was just a guess and when that was wrong turned to TREE, which proved to be correct. I was on the right lines: the actual connection was ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURES, METAPHORICALLY.

For blue, I had a feeling that GARNISH, STIR and STRAIN went together as things you did to food, and thought maybe MUDDLE was also connected; do you muddle a salad maybe? Maybe not! But it was right anyway, though the connection was actually COCKTAIL-MAKING VERBS. Lucky me.

I came this close [makes gesture of roughly 1 inch space] to failing again here, only to scrape home at the last gasp following the realization that I was missing an obvious connection.

Things had started off well, with yellow NOT WORKING RELIABLY standing out immediately. I made an incorrect guess on blue, before spotting that WHAT A SITTER MIGHT SIT applied to BABY, HOUSE, PET and PLANT. But there I stalled.

I could see that MIRROR, GRILLE and BUMPER were all CAR PARTS, but it didn't occur to me that RIM would be another. A rim is a part of a car, I guess, but it doesn't seem as integral as the others; there are rims on many things
other than cars. So I went with RUBBER, thinking of tires, and when that was wrong switched tack and tried something with WEDDING, TRIBUTE and er MIRROR and BOY with the vague thought that it might be something like 'Things you would make a speech to', which was quite clearly a terrible guess and obviously wrong. So I returned to cars and this time thought a bit harder, at which point RIM seemed like it had to fit. And it did of course, but I felt like a right fool.
