• USB3 SSD temp. Freeze

From Mindsurfer@1337:1/104 to All on Wednesday, September 02, 2020 23:29:06
    i have a raspberry pi4 /2gb and have added a msata to usb3 adapter
holding a 256gb ssd. it is connected via powered usb3 hub to the usb3
    port of the raspberry pi4.

But every now and then during data transfers (reading bigger message
bases directories for example) the ssd freezes. the led on the usb3 hub
is blinking and it stays that way for lets say 30seconds.

Aynone had this experience before? Ideas what to check? ..what to fix?
The msata drive is brand new. the adapter too. ssd is formated as ext4
    and the adapter supports UASP.

    i checked smartmontools
    i used fstrim
i have set dirty_bytes and dirty_background_bytes to higher values (made
    it worse)

still ssd freezes on bigger file reads

well, it seems there are adapters out there that dont work well with USB3
UAS on Raspberry Pi4. what a pity! :( The link above has a fix. but the
fix will slow down the SSD. No UAS anymore.

I'm still checking if this was what caused the freezes, but i'm quite
    sure it was.

This is the adapter (or the chip), in case you want to buy one for
yourself. Choose a different one for you Pi4 ;)

Someone in here has a tip wich msata usb3 adapter works well with a
    Raspberry Pi4 and UAS enabled?

I recently rebuilt my server using two Pi4s (1 active, 1 cold stand by) and USB-SATA adaptors.

    This one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07S9CKV7X/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00 ?
    ie=UTF8&psc=1

    worked fine for me.

I actually have 4 hard drives connected to a USB3 hub for this setup. https://photos.app.goo.gl/AzKWFQv3xTCrPVbC9

Note that I used a "RAID -1" (i.e. two of the drives are active, the other 2 are rsync backups of the active drives).

It seems there are some working USB3 to Sata Adapters with a chipset that
works well everywhere. Unfortunatly i wanted to do it with a Msata ssd.
So i needed one of those msata to usb3 enclosures. I mean, even without
UAS activated, it is still fast enough. But i would apreciate the extra
speed of usb3 with uas you know.

Wow, what a beauty :) nice one! i have another hdd connected to do some automated rsync backup of my msata ssd. But i dont have 4 drives in a
case like you =) well done!
