• Pi 4 Cluster w/ ESXI

From MeaTLoTioN@1337:1/101 to Deon on Sunday, December 27, 2020 21:37:21
    Hey Deon

So I just managed to set up my Pi 4 cluster with ESXI on each Pi, however I cannot create any VM's as the storage or datastore is at 0?

I have a 64GB USB stick in each Pi which I installed ESXI to, and an 8GB USB stick which has the install for ESXI 7.0 on. I booted each Pi, installed ESXI and it all seemed to go ok, I log into the web ui and there's no storage available, which is weird as it booted ok off of it.

What do I do to get storage for VM's? Can I use NFS shares as storage? I would like to install vCenter so I can really manage all the pi's as a proper cluster.

What do you suggest I do now?

So ESXi doesnt support USB storage normally, so you need to do some trickery to

    get it to see it.

I too installed ESXi with just the USB stick in the machine, but during the installation I followed a blog (I see there are many now, so I'll see if I can find it), and during the install I needed to tell the installer to not take over the whole disk - leaving space for a VMFS store.

Also, when adding an additional disk, you need to turn off the usb arbitrator -

and the important step was pressing "Shift-O" during the installation and setting autoPartitionOSDataSize to 8192. Did you do that?

Since you have an 8GB usb stick, you could pull out the 64 and install again just onto that stick (and no Shift-O) would be required then - but that stick would just be the OS boot.

Then you can follow this blog, to install the second USB stick:

That's it! That's what I overlooked! Man... ok reinstalling now and will let you know if that cured it, I'm certain it will.

Thanks for that man, I knew I'd forgotten something but I couldn't see it for looking.

Yup, that _was_ it. I can create VM's woohoo.

Now I need to figure out how to get an installation of vCenter to manage the cluster.
