The camera is the only feature I use with regularity that I would likely lose
    if I ever downgrade.

I never really took a lot of picture before my phone.
The hassle of dragging it around, the cost of film/developing, only so
many frames per roll, etc. Now its just slip into my pocket or holster. I use the holster most of the time, don't want to break the phone sitting on it or something.
I've had cheap cameras, SLR's and so forth.
But with the phone if a shot didn't come out right I delete and try
    again.
I took a photography class in college and used to be able to develop my
own film, but never had the equipment to do it at home.
My brother had a dark room in his basement and was even able to do
colour. Don't think he has any of that now. He's the type when something new comes along the old is tossed out. (Oddly enough he's still married to his first wife for 60s years). :)

That said, when I want to be sure to get the best pictures,

I try to frame mine and all. Not just shooting helter-skelter and any
and everything. There are times I'll take multiple shots of something in case one doesn't come out.

The digital zoom just is not as good as having an actual zoom lens.

I don't think my iPhone SE has a zoom. If it does I've never found it.
I had an LG with zoom and still around somewhere. Everything works on
it, but the phone itself. :)
