It got to where I just posted my ad once a week, and turned on
duplicate message checking in ALL the BBS and Network Ad Echoes. Several systems are obviously autoposting messages for their systems several
times a day in some cases. To me, that's overkill.

I agree, posting several times a day IS overkill.

I post my "othernet" advert on here 3 days a week, Monday/Wednesday/Friday (as dictated by the echo rules about 3 times a week or less) and my BBS advert is posted once a day.

I think once a day is good as it gives you more chance to see something you might miss if it was posted less frequently. I like reading the adverts and looking at how much care and attention each sysop puts into them.

I will be more likely to visit a bbs that has a good looking advert with lots of care and attention than an advert in plain text just saying blah bbs telnet this ssh that. If the sysop cares enough to put out a good advert, then I care enough to visit it.

I think that every bbs is great, but what makes them worth visiting
(regularly) is the sysop that runs the bbs. It's like visiting someone in
their home, if you're invited in, take off your shoes and enjoy the company
of the person you're visiting in a nice and well looked after home.

BBSes are personal, and as such each bbs and advert should have a personal touch. There's nothing wrong with any of them that are plain don't get me wrong, I just give my two cents worth.

Imagine every bbs in fidonet did that. The area would become totally useless. And probably a reason for systems to disconnect from it. So you would accomplish the opposit of your original goal with the posts.

I think once a week is plenty enough, to get found by interested readers. And if everybody who posts here keeps to that schedule, every net has the same chance of getting found. If you make it a competition: who can post the most ads, the area gets way too much traffic...

And about ANSI: If you want to get noticed by as many people as possible: Don't
post ANSI messages, that can't be red by a large part of your target audiance.

I understand what you're saying, however it's not about quantity for me.

I don't have any rules about who can join the net of course not, I welcome everyone if they want to join, I just think that a nice ANSI advert doesn't hurt anyone, we used ANSI back in the 80's and I'm sure there's no reason why people can't read it now, besides, I appreciate nice artwork, I can't make
art myself at all, however I do my best... but I would much rather put out something that took me time and effort to show whoever is reading it that I took time and effort in making it, rather than slapping together a few lines
of text and saying to myself, meh that'll do... post!

Now I'm not saying that there's anything wrong in that, plenty of people do that and it's 100% fine, just not for me. I put effort in because I like putting effort in, and I hope that people appreciate that, regardless if my attempts aren't any good in the grand scheme of things but I did my best, and
I hope that is reflected somehow.

I think there's room in these echoes for everyone and for everyone to have their own little bit of it, and to have freedom to express themselves however they choose, if I want to use ANSI, I will, if I don't want to use ANSI, I won't... who is to tell me I'm right or wrong for making that decision
at the time? As long as I am not hurting anyone or saying things I shouldn't, what's the issue?

This isn't a rant, and I know you weren't having a rant at me, I just felt I needed to get this off my chest as too often lately I see posts in echoes
with the speaker offering their "opinion" only to finish it with ... "so
that's why you're wrong and I'm right" kind of attitude and I don't think there's any need for it.

Opinions aren't to be right or wrong, they're just opinions. As long as the actions that come from opinions don't hurt people or cause actual trouble, everything should be ok. After all, if everyone had the same opinion the
world would be so plain and boring. I praise the Lord above for variety and
the gift of free will and to allow us all to be able to think and do things
for ourselves.


No ANSI was harmed in the making of this message!

Thank you. But, as Sean noted, a lot of these are set up with bots
doing it...and the Sysop, once they have set it up, likely never look at
the echo again.

I think twice a week is sufficient. I don't post the ad more than
that. If folks want to logon to my BBS, it's of their choice.
Admittedly, in one of the ham radio applications I have, I do a "plug"
for the system...so every time they "ping" my callsign (WX4QZ) in
D-Rats, they see the plug for it.

Exactly. What someone does outside the BBS is their business, but
they're a guest in my home at logon, and are expected to act
accordingly. I consider myself a guest when I logon to another BBS, even
if I'm a Visiting Sysop. Unfortunately, a ton of other responsibilities
outside the BBS (family, health, finances, etc.) limit me to my own BBS
right now.
