Trump signaled yesterday that he wants to end the war with Iran in two weeks, no matter what. Why, then, would Iran agree to any settlement whatsoever? Iran has won this war, despite the enormous blows it suffered. The fact that they were not defeated on the issues of regime change, uranium enrichment, and the Strait of Hormuz is the victory.

The Strait of Hormuz has been closed again by Iran. This is in response to the Israeli attacks on Lebanon and the fact that Israel does not want to withdraw from Lebanon. The strait is officially closed, but anyone willing to take a risk can sail through... until something goes wrong, and that is a costly mistake.

Israel is the disruptive factor preventing the talks in Switzerland from succeeding regardless. Trump's statement at the start of the talks that Iran should keep a low profile, otherwise he will bomb them back to the Stone Age, did not help the initial talks in Switzerland either. Nevertheless, both parties want an end to the war. They both yearn for peace, but both sides are very clumsy at resolving it diplomatically.

Despite the talks between the US and Iran in Switzerland not running smoothly, oil prices can now be found below 80 dollars per barrel. Furthermore, several oil tankers from the Persian Gulf have escaped by sailing through the Strait of Hormuz in the dark and having their transponders turned off.
