• Screensize compability question

From CatX@21:1/112 to All on Saturday, October 27, 2018 14:55:58
I'm working on a new BBS, and I'm also a bit new to the scene..

As far as I've understood it's generally advised not to use column 80 and row 25, but it looks uneven to me, so I decided to skip column 1 as well, making
it symmetrical. I used this approach in the message editor, but when I
finished it I became a bit curious as to whether this would cause issues with the other BBS-es which receive the messages, as they use the standard screen size.

Is this something I need to be aware of or will the server software handle
line wrapping and such on it's own, regardless of the screen size?

80/25 is the standard for most Term programs, so if you use something different, it will either not load up all of your ANSI or your menus will
have a screen pause (yes/no) at line 25

Well, I technically use 80x24, I just don't draw anything on col 1, this is to make it look symmetrical. It looks perfectly fine on the programs that I've tried (SyncTERM & PuTTY), but I was wondering if it would mess up other BBSes when sending messages as the message editor it's sent from is using a
slightly smaller screen size than what the receiving BBS is using.

I suspect the BBSes will automatically handle this on their own, but as my
BBS isn't connected to any message network yet there's no way for me to test this theory.

If you are inserting a leading space to give visual symmetry when you
display a message, but the space is not part of the message, then I
imagine the distant end would simply shift the next one space to the
left. Presumably line-breaks in text lines would be preserved as part
of the message text, so the effect might not be as (subjectively)
visually attractive, but wouldn't look "weird" on other systems.

When I thought about it after the fact, you shouldn't have any problems with that setup....
