• BBS Discord Server

From Patch@21:1/135 to All on Monday, October 29, 2018 20:28:22
I was wondering if there would be any interest in a 'global' BBS Discord server, somewhere that folks can connect to, voice chat while they roam on BBS's, etc.

Thinking along the lines of each participating BBS would have their own voice and text channel so that they can 'customize' it, etc.

Since I am re-working the website for my BBS, just thought I'd put that out there. I am willing to manage and maintain it, too. Share your ideas.

I just installed discord. Apparently I already had an account, though I
don't remember using it before. I don't really know much about it.

How does that work? If we're all in our own channel would we still hear
    each other?

Could be good I suppose, like I said I don't know much about it but
willing to try it out. (Though I'd have to go searching through my
cupboard for that webcam that has a microphone on it, which is a bigger
    task than it sounds)..

For me I like to chat using the keyboard and reading messages in echomail. I can understand the appeal of voice chat just as there's an appeal for IRC and MRC to have something that's more text based but arguably more immediate than posting in echomail. Although with CRASH traffic and IP connectivity between BBS these days you can also happily have a pretty dynamic group chat going in BBS message bases as well.

Not for me, Voice doesn't fit well into my domestic setup. It would be too intrusive.

Discord is a really awesome platform for voice and text communications. My hope is that we can get folks in there and really become more of a united community, etc.

My thought on that would be that we would all have our own channels separated by BBS software, then by BBS name.

A good thing on this would be that we could post announcements in the text channel.

We could also have a general population channel where we can hang out regardless. There is a means to communicate to folks in other channels, text to speech options, etc.

Ask USA CIA, they know where it is =)

It's still in the infancy stage, planning, etc. Just wanted to see if there
    is an interest in it.

That's the big thing for me, is that I don't want to take away from the BBS experiene. However on the other hand, remember when you helped me get the network messaging up, for me it was so much easier when we did it via
    Discord.

Imagine how that could work for you setting up new nodes, etc. Could that essentially help to save some time for you?
