stupid but display a "herd mentality". In which the lowest

Which is stupid in itself. People doing stupid thing are stupid

Two things come to mind here.. I tend to be a loner, and my sons psychologist
indicated that this is unusal. Human beings are normally group animals.

The other one and I can't find any reference for it now, comes from a Roman who
declares that individuals can be reasoned with, the mob is intractable.

Both of these things seem to be part of the human condition. And we respond at something other than a reasoned level. Quite possibly related to fight or fright and survival instincts. Otherwise smart people can be sucked into incredibly stupid things in a "mob" a riot, or any other set of similar circumstances.

Same here. My mom used to get on my case and tease me about it growing up. Being a loner, I didn't really care :P

This is probably true. Mob mentality is gross, and at times pretty dangerous. But I agree with you, it must be part of the human/social condition. There
must be some survival instinct that triggers this.

You know, I think it is pretty well established at this point that people feels
that their identity is reaffirmed when they fight the enemies of a group they belong to. If you are a fan of the Lakers there is a good chance that you will feel well bullying a fan of other team in school.

Then there is the problem that weak people is attracted to the leadership of strong people, so there are lots of weird groups dynamics in there. Like when a
popular person declares publicly in a classroom that somebody sucks... people will start bullying that person because they have implicit permission from their society, and is the popular thing to do. In fact, if you don't join you are likely to become a targe yourself.

I have heard conversations that sounded a lot like "Why are you bulling me?" "You know, I like you, but I have to because everybody else is doing it".

Speaking as a Lakers fan, your team choice is totally terrible because
    reasons.

I always kinda liked some of the sports arguing, as I view it like arguing about food -- no one is right, but everyone can express strong opinions
because it's fun. And because no one really takes it seriously.

But then I realize that I'm wrong about that -- to my horror -- some people do take it seriously, beyond my, "You should never buy store-bought pie crust (graham cracker and puff-pastry versions excepted)" sort of opinions where
I'd be horrified if stores were badgered into stopping selling it.

And the chats in sports forums are my examples of when I almost always am dumber after reading more.

Yeah, I'm reminded of the "Super Fans" skit on Saturday Night Live from the early-mid 90s, where they'd sit around and discuss/argue football (and eat sausages and other things). They'd comment things like "I predict that sports team will win, 105 to -10" and such.

These days, I don't give a rat's arse about following sports teams. My involvement in sport is to actually _do_ it. I'm chasing the next PB, or in a friendly rivalry with an opponent. :) And at Masters meets, it's like catching up with old friends. We're serious on the track and social after the race. :)

I'm more likely to throw down a challenge. Who's up for a 100m race? :D

As for watching sport, I only watch the AFL Grand Final (old tradition) and sports that are related to what I do, like track and field at the Olympics and other major meets.

And the chats in sports forums are my examples of when I almost always
    am dumber after reading more.

More intelligence among those of us who actually _do_ it. We discuss things from upcoming events to training tips. :)
