Do you folks have projection of some kind for song lyrics?

Yeah, its a bit of a fangled setup though, the display screen is mounted quite high, projector is mounted from the roof. Makes it useless at present, I'd have a choice between displaying lyrics or text on said display or the big man doing the talking, to try and display both would be to do both badly.

I've only seen it in use once or twice, and they don't really quite have a handle on it for my money. The computer driving the display has been outfitted

with high res widescreen displays and the projector is a 3:4 so the projector is doing its best, but has horribly squashed images.

Not familiar with the term pooty action. Do you mean like kludge/patchwork/duct-tape action?

Well the pooty is the computer... so its mostly just console work, if you want to find a better shot on a camera you can wander over to it and fiddle its settings and then go back and switch to it. Mind you, it is getting better, but it still has they duct-tape and cable tie feel to it at the moment. :)

I don't envy the person who will be responsible for operating the
3 cameras. Usually something like that would be good with extra
    pairs of eyes.

the software, "OBS" allows you to see what each camera is looking at and switch

any of them into the live feed. Mostly its the front camera that does the most

work, with throw ins from the others if stageman/woman either wanders off or there's more happening on stage. Keyboard, 2 x singers for arguments sake. But

if you have a problem on one cam for whatever reason you can also switch its feed out, and go and recalibrate it or add filtering to the image and then swap

    it back in.

The setup they're looking at is esceedingly more convoluted, little keypad of its own, so you select the cam, and remotely fiddle the tilt/pan/zoom. I'm happy enough despite its own limitations driving the current setup.

I have hoped to volunteer for certain operations of a service at my church and give it a smoother more professional look, but it seems
that "older" people have a hard time reliquishing duties to newer
(ie. younger) people. There are still too many situations
when the operators can't seem to get a recorded video to play
properly on the projection. I am quite fine to sit in the
    sidelines actually - less hassle.

IME a lot of people in these sorts of positions seem to wear them like a badge.

You can't look at this its mine, and feel threatened by offers of help or taking a turn at the wheel. I was "lucky(?)" they had no one else.. I say that, but the had a borrowed operator who while competent, wasn't interested enough to do more than an absolute bare minimum. I got wheeled in when she wasn't available and then they retired her.

I'd give the operator benefit of the doubt? maybe.. it can be hard to figure out just when to swap soemthing in. There's no schedule as such so each one is

a wing it and see how it goes. Although it should be easy enough to have something cued to go at the push of the button so to speak.

Its surprising just how much stress it adds to the whole thing. Its always nice

to get to the end of the show... so the sidelines are a good spot, if you can cope with the foibles.

projected in my church too. But there was a setting in the
projector config that helped. The projector has it's own remote controller.

I do believe there is a remote for this thing kicking around somewhere too, but

I only learned of it after covid lockdown, thats when this streaming business started. Once you get the hang of how it works its fairly easy to maintain reasonable control. Even wandering around resetting cameras for a better shot.

The remote control for tilt/pan/zoom is good doesn't sound too

I did kind of think that too, what with the whole, "digital natives" aspect
    of things.

But I think that has translated into people being good with memes and using
all the social media services, rather than any great technological ability.

But I assume there's at least as many techie kids now - probably more, even. But people's needs are certainly different. E.g., pretty well has a
smartphone at this point, but having a laptop or desktop computer seems like it's becoming significantly less common.

So most of the tech support things probably involve figuring out how to go to settings, or fiddling with a SIM card or something.

Interesting. I discovered the same thing myself years ago when my first wife was still living. She and I were different ethnic backgrounds, and her family was very involved in church. I tried getting them interested in computerizing some things, no interest at all. 20-30 churches in their circle.

    Oh, actually...

Lots of kids are familiar with computers as end users. In fact, many think they like computing. They think computing is running office suites and games.

They like computing so much that they take Computer Science or a related Engineering at college.

In two weeks they realize "computing" means managing memory and programs and reading RFC's and oh-my-god I didn't put a break in that while loop.

Half the people who takes these studies drops off before the end of the first year. Modern humans want results quickly and effortlessly and are not made for dealing with machines at a low level.

Let's face it, using games and social media is to computers what driving is to cars; adapting a computer system to provide a custom solution for a problem is to computers what mechanics are to cars. They are just different things.

They seem to have lost something though, which is why the computer has become more like an appliance than a tool. We were trying to figure out how to fit computers to any job you could think of, while they've become users of off the shelf gear, on the beaten path so to speak.

I think thats the divide between being a "tech" and being a administrator/ programmer... the hardware guys vs the software guys. And a lot/most of the eggheads didn't make particularly good techs. The tech's were the guys trying to make stuff do the things the eggheads didn't think about...

I am thinking more 20 years ago from my experience, there wasn't a lot of AV type stuff that interested them. I did try to get them to record their Youth Choir and other singing groups. It was primarily relatives of mine by marriage, so obviously there us probably bias, but I truly thought they were as talented as anyone on the National Gospel scene at the time.

I don't think it is a hardware vs software problem.

If you check the "Maker" section of Linux magazine you'll find people blending hardware and software to do all sort of things. Like that remote controlled mini-boat you could control with a smartphone :-)

I think the real issue is people getting content with off-the-shelf products and not enjoying the creative part of their hobbies. This applies to lots of other fields too.

    It's very quick to load.

Intersting, although said machine isn't doing anything else of notice. Its another NBN install so although I haven't tested the speed it should be reasonably quick.

Grammar error? --> When & Where somewhere of the rainbow.

Ahhh yeah... will have to have another look...

The "Studio" is impressive! Three cameras! But I worry about the
    tower of pisa. LOL

The tower is actually gone... I had a theory to use a projector on the background for a "live"/recursive background... never got off the ground though. Screen was a problem, and the big man made the pronouncment he wasn't really intersted.

He's talking about replacing those 3x Handy Cams with 3 studio quality cameras.

<boggle> Obviously not short of a quid. I think that'll be my cue to exit stage left. At the moment its all pooty action.. The 3 cams at least give you a chance to find one thats having a good day and all the filters give a decent looking picture.
