How complicated is an Amateur license these days? VK3CAW had me consider it oohhh about 20 years ago, it seemed a little interesting but wasn't really in my "field". At the time, it looked like you'd need to study some numbers and few formulas, nothing to tricky.

I understand that some class of amateur license will also allow you to exceed the regular 36db limit for 2.4Ghz..

The other question is... to participate in AX25 at some "usable" speed, what kind of band/frequency are we looking at? What kind of aerial/antenna are we going to be looking at, and at what kind of length?

The hardest part will be sourcing the modem. You're looking at

You mean I can't get out my old AVTEK? :) Convert the signal to audio and feed it in over the phone jack? :) Just kidding..

practical test (how to call a station, antenna tuning, etc).

Chuckle.... how do you work this thing?

Alright jokes aside, I feel my biggest concerns up front are stil... there was mention of different bands for different speeds, I don't recall the detail now.
So assuming I want to go FAST, and who doesn't. If I recall right it'll be a higher freq for higher speeds. Am I going to need one of those 3 kilomter long
aerials I see in some of the locals backyards? I should go and talk to my old neighbour stan, not sure if its him or is son, but one of them has some interest... they have the tell tale aerial :)
