Getting under the house isn't an option, and phone points aren't
in a useful location.

Ahh you have one of those low slung models :) That does make life trickier. If
you can roll your own cable, and its not solid brick because there's plenty of
those there too, it might be conceiveable to go through the wall above the floor plate. If you wanted it to look neat stick a wall plate on each side. Floor plate will rise about 50-60mm above the floorboards usually. It'll be behind the skirting, thats nailed to it. A bit of filler and a quick touchup when you move out :)

They seem to occur semi randomly if I abort a message without writing anything,
I guess because of my UTC kludge. Means that the empty message is different to an empty message. The BBS inserts it into the msg base.

I also have an intermittent problem where quoting doesn't work when replying, usually just aborting and having another go will fix the problem. Occasionaly it requires more than one go.

That'd be where the empties come from.

Well, now it's not worth making the attempt, good chance we'll be out
by the end of the year, and in something we can wire as needed.

Generally, no I don't.. unless there's an issue... I tend to spot rogue issues due to system load and odd processes ;)
