One of my other theories was trying to get my message areas
into a news server and provide a www frontend onto the nntp
    server. I have

End Of The Line BBS (EOL) does exactly that. Just set up your news
reader to point to it. It's "free" to subscribe and read-only.

Maybe EOL can gate something for you.

Trouble is I wanted to put my local message bases out there too, means I need to manage the gateway locally. So gateway has come to naught.

The ones I was on had a badge on each member page, where you could
choose to go to the next site in the ring, previous site or jump
to a random site in the ring.

Yeah I remember that bit.. I don't know if the pages were hard linked, or it went back to the webring site to find the next one. I have a thought stuck in my head if you went via the webring site, not a child site, you lost some realestate at the top to the same setup, previous, next and random pages. Which

    then popped up below.

If you found it via the child site then you lost the pages header and it was just the sites links to the before or next.... Not sure how you'd drive it to be honest. Probably more databasing for the site names and links I s'pose..

What we need (I think) is something like nntp that supports what we
need support for in the networks. Netmail and echomail and support for
a To: name. Aside from those details nntp would work well for us.
    Actually nntp may support
that or be able to support that with a little work.

JAMNNTPD gives you that functionality. All you need to do is
    install it.

Does that work for addressing a message To: someone in echomail also?

Yes, all you have to do is to put the TO: on the first line.
    JAMNNTPD does the rest.

I love seeing messages addressed to Fidonet.Dingle.Dangle.

    That doesn't happen with JAMNNTPD.

Yep, FTN/BINKP/IFCICO is great for any of us here abouts I'd say but
    I'd really
like to see a service like nntp but directly supporting what we are
doing instead of trying to kludge things together.

Give JAMNNTPD a try. I can create an account for you in my system if you want.

JamNNTP is almost a perfect echomail experience for people who can be trained to use Thunderbird or Sylpheed or similar.

Couldn't agree more. Sylpheed is the best.

The From and To names are maintained nicely so that you can see who the reply is meant for before you even open up the message. Threading
    works really nicely in TB.

    Yes.

If it is too me, then JamNNTP also changes the "to" for echomail.

Where are the lastread pointers kept? That's been a major issue for me with NNTP in the past (using built in NNTP support in Mystic or SBBS).
I have no experience with JSMNNTPd. I believe it has a separate
config, which doesn't suit me either (assuming I'm running a BBS as
    well).

That's the downside of JAMNNTPD - lastread pointers are managed
    separately from the BBS.

Any lastread pointers kept on the server(BBS) side? The client side lastread pointers that newsreaders normally use was a major bugbear in
my previous attempts to use NNTP (for mobile BBSing).

Unfortunately it's handled by the client like other NNTP servers.

That's why it would be nice if JAMNNTPD-like functionality could
be ported to a BBS system.
