It horrifies me that you might be right.
It's sad that it couldn't have turned into, oh, "What expensive
gadget would make things easier or more enjoyable for you?", and wind
up with odd things like drawing tablets and Alphagrips (weird
keyboard controller that seems neat for doing stuff while lying
prone, but requires re-learning how to use a keyboard.).
The corporate problem with that is how to track it all. You end up with a register with 20k different devices instead of one device for 20k units. And each individual item will have a different value and devalue at a different rate... have to try and keep some money out of the bean counters jobs by keeping it easier for them ;) But I concur with your principle, horses for courses would be nice.
