Hmm another one of those things thats been annoying me for a while.. the East weathercam has been horribly unreliable requiring restarts as often as 2-3 times a day. Initially I put it down to power and tried a variety of different

power supplies. After a while I decided they couldn't all be dud and move the camera to a different location.

Initially it fired up nicely, and stayed running for 4 days without a hitch.. then something happened. It was going slower than a wet week or a melting blancmange. The first thing to mind was thermal throttling, the thing was running but the speed appeared to be shot... It was showing some~38c not real hot.. the Raspi runs much the same temp. Still iI gave it a squirt with some IPA and it immediately cooled to ~20 and the problem persisted.

Deciding it wasn't temp, I also just in case tried swapping out the Camera itself, and the hub it was mounted on. No Change... I put it aside for a bit, and left it powered down overnight... this morning it powered up and went hell for leather from the get go, but over the next 30mins or so it started to show signs of lagging again.

Given this thing is an OrangePiOne, and has an ethernet port on it, and that the new location is next to the server, I decided to pull the wifi dongle and try wired networking instead. Despite initial hiccoughs getting it to appear at

the right IP address, the thing is now outperforming the PiZero, and providing approximately double the framerate from previously. With nary a hitch.

I remain somehat suprised that the over busy USB port could..

    - Tie the system up so badly, for all intents looking like thermal

    throttling.
    - That only the two devices could so badly tie it up.
    - That it would appear to work fine at startup and then
    degrade over time.
