Well part of my network rearrangement required me to get a second nic into brightmatter. Any other time this would just go swimmingly and rotary hoe as they say.
Not tonight/this morning... 5 hrs later, I'm exactly where I started. First attempted install was an RTL8169 based card, Gb job.... after a few choice words it'd pop up in lspci, you could see it in ifconfig but it would refuse to
configure and claim it couldn't set the address you gave it. This one to ok the most messing around and was the most maddening.
After this, although I accept they're getting long in the tooth, a selection of rtl8139 fast ethernet jobbies... none of these would even show up as existing in the mobo, in either of its two pci slots... Now I could happily accept I have a dead card or two in this collection, but it seems unlikely every card is a complete dud.
Has anyone else had any similar problems with NICs recently? For what its not worth ;) This is the buntu 16.04 box.
