If you run syncterm from a desktop session it will look much better. Adjust the video output mode to one of the SDL modes.

Its one of the things I run in windoze so it'd have to be a "desktop session"? I'll have a poke through the settings again, I'm not familiar with SDL modes though.

Also, log into a Synchronet BBS from your terminal using plain old
telnet. Synchronet supports UTF-8.
Seriously.. try it.. :)

Been there, I use the telnet client in Ubuntu fairly frequently, near as much as I'd use putty. And yes you have no extended chars I don't recall to much gibberish though.
