Not sure how many people keep "Antique" systems... I have 3 varieties of
Apple II here, a Clone II+, a Clone IIe, and a genuine IIgs. Now the IIe
came with an Amber Composite monitor which was alright at best. Bit tweeky in 80 column mode. Move on to the IIgs, it didn't come with its original
monitor, which was prone to problems, meaning I had to borrow CloneE's amber and use that for a while. On a IIgs this is about the equivalent of driving down the street with your handbrake on.

After messing with this for a while, I blew to many readies on a VidHD card. This thing plugs into the AppleII bus like a regular card, sniffs the bus
data and outputs to 1080p HDMI. Now when I got this it seemed like a no brainer to leave it with the GS...

What I've begun to notice though is that composite monitors are actually
quite rare, and no TV's with a composite mode generally don't do the job very well. So I've move the AMBER over to the Clone+, VidHD has gone into CloneE and it does a very nice job there. Something about those resolutions still works on the 32" LCD.

The GS and I guess many other computers of the time have some "odd" synch requirements in order to achieve a picture. In this case 15kHz RGB..
Multisync style monitors won't display it, I got one to work once, my spiffy graphics came out looking like ANSI so I'm not sure what it thought it was displaying, otherwise nothing.

Turns out this is real close to the SCART/SECAM display modes. If you build a custom cable for the appropriate signals, you can get a really good picture
on anything that has a scart socket on it, because you know it's going to support the SCART standards which allow for RGB down as low as 15kHz...

As much as I LOVE the result, the future will ultimately still be with the VidHD I think. Its current and HDMI isn't going away any time soon. The SCART solution is an effective one if you can lay hand to a set that has a SCART socket on it.

I don't know if anyone else has a setup with a picky/prickly display setup but its worth looking at the details sometimes something a little left field might work nicely for you.
