    Hi

I'm wondering if it would be benificial to split up the bot area? I know a lot of people don't read it, but it seems to be a soup of BBS ads, Weather Reports, new file listings and anything else made by bots. Which I know is what is intended, but as it gets more and more traffic, it's harder to find what you want to look at.

I was thinking perhaps keeping FSX_BOT as a catch all, but splitting off some more topical bot posts into their own area, eg, bbs adds, file updates etc.

Personally, I like looking at BBS ads, especially ones that don't come up very often - just because I like seeing what people are doing, new ads for old bbses are cool too, the effort people put in etc.

Others might like weather reports, who knows.

Just an idea, at present it feels like more of an area for people to experiment with bots, rather than something to be read.

I wouldn't mind this either. Also, I'd lovet for a rule of once per week at most, or even once bi-weekly for BBS ads. I have mine set for one week and it seems too much. Some I see every single day.

Perhaps if it was an echo for only ads once a week would be plenty, but with all the files arrived here, linux vulberabilites and weather here, there and everywhere else I can understand people posting once a day.

Personally I also post once a week.

I know is what is intended, but as it gets more and more traffic, it's harder to find what you want to look at.

It can be difficult to find. It's great the traffic is increasing, but I also think splitting it would be a good idea.

    Good thread and thought starter.

I also agree with the sentiments expressed too.

The tension I have (as always) is not wanting to create any more echos than
    is really necessary.

I was (some time ago) thinking about trying to find a way to split out the fsxNet HUB stats + reports from everything that flows through FSX_BOT for the same reasons you mention.. find-ability, read-ability etc.

I think a FSX_ADS echo makes sense and agree we could request only one post
per week to keep daily same same posts to a min.

The trick then is what else to split off and what to keep together?

Just thinking off the top of my head here...

    So we have

    * new files hatched / received reports
    * echomail area stats + network traffic stats (between zones, nodes etc.
    * gated info like the weather reports or virus alerts etc.

Would an area for each of these three be the way forward also?

I confess I kinda still want to have something for echomail stats + network traffic that is just fsxNet HUB data only... so perhaps we need another for that?

With a possible BBS ads echo FSX_ADS we could also end up with a further four additional echos... so now we're up to five new, and then there's good old FSX_BOT as well..

    See my dilemma? :)

Let me now you're thoughts... happy to collectively crowd source this and implement it there after... but lets try to keep the number of new echos to a min if poss and be really clear about what goes in each for the benefit of
    all who come along :)

Oh and I was wondering about a FSX_TST for all test posts and pointing the
test bot to that area instead? This was mooted some time back... that would remove most testing from GEN echo.

In my opinion, we could start with adding of three echos. One could be the FSX_ADS for BBS/Network Ads. One for echomail stats, FSX_STA? One for file announcements, such as FSX_FIL. And the current FSX_BOT could remain for gated info, or other misc bot posts.

I confess I kinda still want to have something for echomail stats + networktraffic that is just fsxNet HUB data only... so perhaps we need another forthat?

That wouldn't be a bad idea. I've actually heard from a couple Sysops, that it can be difficult to follow message threads in FSX_GEN, as there can be so many different conversations going on at once. That could reduce the 'noise' by a little bit.

Just throwing out ideas here... :)

Yup, I dont read it - but I know there are some good things in there - I used to like reading the jokes of the day.

    Good thread and thought starter.

From a relatively new member of the network, the FSX_BOT area is more than a bit jumbled. I have been on the network for just over a month and have almost 4,000 posts in there!

I'm seeing BBS ads for the same board daily.
There seems to be duplicate versions for some items that come with both an [ASCII] and [ANSI] tag.
The weather postings for general forecasts don't serve me much purpose personally but might be useful for others.

The one that is still "breaking" my system (synchronet) is the ANSI Melbourne weather forecast.

I do think it needs some kind of structure but completely understand the "as few as possible" item as well.

    Avon / apam,

I can understand why some folks would want them split out. There is a lot
of traffic in that echo. I have no problem as a user/sysop with seeing it split up some. I don't have any particular suggestions but will be happy
to add whatever new echos come out of it.

Hi team. Your feedback welcome :) Anything need tweaking? Too much, too
    little?

    [snip]

    == Echoareas ================================================================

    Message Echos:

FSX_TST - Test messages and other experimentation is welcome here! Messages
using the subject of 'Test' *should* receive an automated response
from a roBOT. Humans can also appear magically with reports too.
Your mileage may vary. Offer is not available at Vanda Station.

FSX_GEN - A general discussion echoarea covering many topics.

FSX_MYS - Mystic BBS discussions, support and development.

FSX_MAG - Magicka BBS discussions, support and development.

FSX_BBS - BBS software, development and support. The echoarea is also
host to fsxNet Wiki (wiki.fsxnet.nz) discussions and support.

FSX_ENG - ENiGMA 1/2 BBS discussions, support and development.

FSX_HAM - Amateur Radio discussions. Covers all aspects of HAM radio
including DX, HF, VHF/UHF, various digital modes etc.

FSX_CRY - Cryptographic discussion and experimentation.
Public key sharing, encoded messages, testing etc.
    is welcome here.

FSX_NET - Discussions about fsxNet. Chat about current network operations,
plans for the future and how to best implement them.

FSX_ESP - Espanol General Chat. This echoarea offers a place for Spanish
language conversations. Like FSX_GEN it is a general discussion
echoarea covering many topics. Test messages and other
    experimentation is welcome.

Este echoarea ofrece un lugar para conversaciones en espanol.
Al igual que FSX_GEN, es una discusi¢n general que abarca muchos
temas. Mensajes de prueba y otros experimentos son bienvenidos.

FSX_ADS - BBS and NETwork Ads. Run a BBS you want to tell the world about?
Use a roBOT or manually post your BBS ASCII / ANSI ads here.
Please don't post the same thing more than once a week (7 days).
Let's keep it 'minty fresh' - too much of the same thing usually
    ends in a diet :)

FSX_STA - Echomail + Network Stats. The echoarea for roBOT posts about

This echoarea contains roBOT posts covering files received by fsxNet
member BBS or files hatched from fsxNet HUBS to the wider community.

FSX_BOT - We welcome non-human roBOT output here. Gated or original content
(e.g. weather, telemetry, entertainment etc.) lives here. BBS ads
(FSX_ADS) and file announcements (FSX_FIL) live elsewhere.

FSX_DAT - InterBBS Data. An echomail area used by software such as InterBBS
Oneliners, Last Caller Mods etc to send inter-BBS data between nodes
in fsxNet. In most cases the data is not readable or of interest to
human eyes. Sysops may wish to hide this echo from BBS users.

Which ones should be "posting by fsxNet SysOps only"?
    Guessing on at least FSX_BOT, FSX_DAT, FSX_FIL, FSX_NET and FSX_STA.

Perhaps FSX_STA should be kept read-only to non-hub (etc.) nodes?

(If so, not sure if this should be forced at the hubs or if we should "soft-force" it locally using ACS of the message area. Either or both would
    be fine.)

    Guessing on at least FSX_BOT, FSX_DAT, FSX_FIL, FSX_NET and FSX_STA.

Humm... well I've never stated any are sysop only. But have suggested hiding the DAT echo from users who probably would not care to read illegible posts
or should post to that echo leading to downstream confusion by software using the echo data.

My hope is folks can be sensible about how those echos should be configured without the need to be prescriptive about it :) If chaos ensues then I guess
we could ask for certain settings to be enforced.

Perhaps FSX_STA should be kept read-only to non-hub (etc.) nodes?

I can see how some nodes in the network may wish to post their stats to this echo so no, I don't think it should be HUB only. I did wonder out aloud at
some stage about a specific echo for just those network/hub stats... but
agree with Dan (I think it was?) when he suggested if we split out the BOT
echo posts they way we will likely soon do, that having the HUB stats in FSX_STA would work well enough and be more easily found.

I do think setting the author name of those posts for NET stats reports to something standardized across all HUBs posting stuff etc.. would be helpful
to quickly identify those types of posts.

Will be updating infopack with the following today:

    [snip]

    == ChangeLog ================================================================ 2020-10-26
Created FSX_TST Test messages and other experimentation is welcome here!
Messages using the subject of 'Test' *should* receive an
automated response from a roBOT. Humans can also appear
magically with reports too. Your mileage may vary. Offer
is not available at Vanda Station.

Created FSX_ADS BBS and NETwork Ads. Run a BBS you want to tell the world
about? Use a roBOT or manually post your BBS ASCII / ANSI
ads here. Please don't post the same thing more than once a
week (7 days). Let's keep it 'minty fresh' - too much of the
same thing usually ends in a diet :)

Created FSX_STA Echomail + Network Stats. The echoarea for roBOT posts
about echomail area stats, BBS mailer traffic and gateway
activity. FTN network stats / reports are also posted here.
Some people read them cover to cover while others like
    horoscopes better :)

Created FSX_FIL File Announcements. I like files, you like files, we all
like files! This echoarea contains roBOT posts covering files
received by fsxNet member BBS or files hatched from fsxNet
    HUBS to the wider community.

With the creation of the new echoareas there have been some tweaks to the descriptions and usage of existing echomail areas. Please note the following updated info for these echos:

FSX_BOT - We welcome non-human roBOT output here. Gated or original content
(e.g. weather, telemetry, entertainment etc.) lives here. BBS ads
    (FSX_ADS) , echomail stats (FSX_STA) or file announcements (FSX_FIL)
    live elsewhere.

FSX_GEN - A general discussion echoarea covering many topics.

    [snip]

The new echos have been created and sent to all HUBs. I have updated the descriptions against each new echoarea in the NET 4 and NET 2 hubs as per the new NA file (shared y/day here).

Deon - could you kindly shift the test bot from FSX_GEN to it's new home of FSX_TST please and update your echo descriptions for 3/100 please :)

Ruben - could you update your echo descriptions at 5/100 please.

Later when I have done some 'to do list' stuff for my wife I will circle back to fsxNet and start posting about this to GEN and also BOT echo along with hatching out the update info pack and updating web etc.

    Best, Paul

Well, I actually thought it best that folks subscribe to what they want (I know

all systems dont get the previous "BOT" echo).

I'm also thinking it would be goot to "unsub" everybody from the old bot, and have them re-sub as a "active" action - hopefully also making them to move their "BBS ads" to the right echo.

I am forseeing that some folks dont change their BBS ads posts and they continue on the BOT echo.

That wouldn't be a bad idea. I've actually heard from a couple Sysops, that it can be difficult to follow message threads in FSX_GEN, as there

There seems to be duplicate versions for some items that come with
both an [ASCII] and [ANSI] tag. The weather postings for general
forecasts don't serve me much purpose personally but might be
    useful for others.

I'm not sure they're really useful for anybody to be honest. I started to post mine because I was excited I finally got the script working, and just added the

The one that is still "breaking" my system (synchronet) is the ANSI Melbourne weather forecast.

Well, I actually thought it best that folks subscribe to what they want
(I know all systems dont get the previous "BOT" echo).

When I set up a node I sub them to all echos, so in NET 1 most do. But I take your point about opt in. That said (as an aside) I think we should be subbing new nodes coming into fsxNet to all available message echos and file areas
when they join, they can opt out of any if they wish to thereafter with areafix. So long as we let them know when they join that they are linked to everything by default I think that would be OK.

I'm also thinking it would be goot to "unsub" everybody from the old
bot, and have them re-sub as a "active" action - hopefully also making them to move their "BBS ads" to the right echo.

I don't disagree but I think I'd like to post some messages in FSX_BOT for a couple of weeks to alert folks to the changes and encourage manually shifting themselves over etc. We also need to offer a HUB assisted option to manually link nodes to new echos should they want it. I've seen some email dialogue today where Dan has been asked to do just that for a node needing help.

After a couple of weeks we could delink all nodes from BOT then folks who
post the weather data, earthquake reports etc. could resub and carry on.

My devils advocate voice does wonder aloud though if were making it unnecessarily complicated by dropping subbed nodes and asking/expecting them
to resub again to the same echo?

That's actually a work in progress here. I'm working on an Inter-BBS door that would receive the questions, and the users could answer them and have scores sent back.

I've got too many projects... :)

It's just these are echos that (will) contain the same data posted to
    the BOT
echo now and I'm 99% sure most systems take a feed of the BOT echo... so
    I
worry they may miss file announcements etc and BBS ads over time as
    folks
    migrate.

I'm sure they'd survive :P It's up to you of course, and I am sure the majority

of systems do support auto adding. I've already added them to my WWIV BBS.

Maybe a little blitz of advertising wouldn't hurt, even if it's just to say if you haven't joined you will be auto added at date x, feel free to unsubscribe after that?

I haven't added the areas on wunderlust, I'm pretty sure if it was added it would just drop the messages with a log message saying unknown area.

Sounds slightly different to what I was thinking... My theory would have the trivia bot look a little like a mail processor... it'd look for posts addressed

to itself, and to make the answer checking easier, you'd have to reply to the original question post to make it count. So you'd have some kind of question # and other identifiers in the subject line. It'd check the right or wrong answer

and assign a score to the author of said message, and you'd only score the first answer that arrives. Ignore everything after. Once a week it could spit out a weekly/monthly score... only issue from there might be multiple users across more than one BBS having the same name.

That surprises me. I modified the script to post the simpler ansi
version. Its only got 3 colour changes on a per line basis I think
off hand. Whats it blowing up on now? Previously it appeared to be the

Yeah, it messes me up to.

In that posting, there are some non color ANSI CSI codes (somebody worked it out, but I dont recall now) - but they are affectively working like a "jump", so as soon as your message is rendered (and interpreted), the display is jumped

any particular finesse, no knowing any ansi codes or how to actually insert them, all I did was write a single line in colour in TheDraw and then stitch them together with the text following. If it can be identified I can probably edit it out. The icon that used to be on the bottom, added screen movement/cursor control, because it was tacked onto the end, so I expected the issue to go away with that.

The one that is still "breaking" my system (synchronet) is the ANSI Melbourne weather forecast.

That surprises me. I modified the script to post the simpler ansi version. Its only got 3 colour changes on a per line basis I think off hand. Whats it blowing up on now? Previously it appeared to be the associated icon that I cut from the end.

I'm able to view the un-rendered version in MultiMail and it appears that
there is an ANSI call that Sync doesn't like ']c 7h; (I flipped some characters so it wouldn't render) appears on the end of the "Current Observations" line where all the others show ']?7h (again, mangled to
    prevent misinterpretations by readers).

I agree. I'd rather approach and provide info/guidance.

One area that I felt was not clear from my written posts so far was inter-bbs game scores and other BBS posting game scores/stats.

I kinda think that FSX_STA is the best place for them for now without adding
a further echo just for those things. I think we can argue fairly
successfully that they are stats also.

After the last 12 hours I've picked up a few more posts from 1/10 and 1/100 that I will need to tweak.

I also also started to set the author to 21:1/100 or 21:1/10 so it's easier
to tell which system is posting the content. I'd encourage you and Deon to do the same so we're all consistent in how we publish stuff.

Maybe, not all software supports auto adding of Areas though.

    Andrew
That was one of the suggestions I asked to Rushfan for wwiv. Maybe you could think of a solution. either via wwivutil or a seperate external utility.

I suppose you could have a utility that scans dead.net for messages from non existant areas, and creates it and adds it.

It wouldn't be a very elegant solution though. Far better to have an option in the network setup to allow creating of areas and having the network utilities auto create them upon receiving a message.

I was wondering if for the BOT echos we should just sub all nodes?

    I leaning towards yes.. thoughts?

I need pre warning or control, otherwise I get a lot of BAD messages that I can't toss into the messagebase (they get treated as dupes).

Or more correctly, you can turn them all on for 1/143 (which is auto creating), but not for 1/109.

That can play havoc with my executive dysfunction - a low priority job that never gets attended to. ;) Also, doing anything without consulting me can lead to confusion - those who know me well know not to move anything without telling me, because I tend to subconsciously keep track of a lot of information, and moving or changing something puts me out of sync with the actual situation. :) --- SBBSecho 3.10-Linux
