The first 'family' computer we had (other than the Tandy that my dad bought and then returned after about two weeks) was a 286 clone that we got around 1986, so this thing brings back some good memories. I learned how to code on a 286, first in GWBasic, and then in QuickBASIC. (I moved onto TurboPascal and then C when I got my own 386 during my senior year of high school.)
I've installed a bunch of games that I remember playing on that old system. This is like a bonus round of reliving the past, though, because that old 286 had a hercules graphics card in it and this machine has a VGA card in it. (Oh, how I pined for an EGA card back in those days, or really any thing that could get me closer to the screenshots in the game magazines. (Only later did I realize that most of those were Amiga captures. :D)
even how much I'd use it. I'd enjoy having that feel of using the
actual hardware, but it's easy enough to emulate old PCs too.

Or you can go REAL old school and have an Atari 800 (and maybe a few of the XL line, and a few ST's to round it out). :)
:) I never used any Atari computers myself.. The only home computers
I've had were IBM-compatible PCs (and the people I knew mostly had
them too). I had briefly used Amiga computers a few times elsewhere though.
