Don't all components have to have a hole through the board? I don't understand that term. :)
Newer stuff is even smaller and through-hole won't work. Most of that stuff is surface mount (think 2 conductive pads on which you place some solder, then the component then heat it up to melt everything together).
Having done both as a hobbiest, surface mount is a pain. Maybe because I'm just getting old and it's harder to handle those tiny connections.
